Gastric Bypass Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone reading. I'm 5'8 and 318 lbs. I've been looking into surgery for weight loss since 2013. I never pursued it at the time because my hubby and I had our 3rd and last daughter. I'm the highest weight I've ever been. My spine surgeon referred me to a bariatric surgeon due to osteoarthritis in my lower back and sacroiliac joint deterioration mostly due to being overweight since I started (TMI) my monthly at age 12. Any info on the process? I really want the gastric bypass done. I go to my first appointment with the surgeon May 18th...my birthday lol, I'll be 30.Thanks for any advice!

Hi, Blissy518! We sound like twins, except for the fact that I'm 25 years older than you. I gotta tell you, you're doing the right thing to take action now, because that SI joint stuff certainly doesn't get better with age. I can hardly walk this week--I'm overdue for a steroid injection, which I'll probably have done in a couple of weeks.

I've been researching and thinking about this surgery for 2 years, since my gallbladder surgeon told me that he wouldn't fix my hiatal hernia unless I had WLS too, because it just wouldn't do any good. Now I'm with a different surgeon at a different hospital in a different city (all because my husband's employer switched insurance companies.)

I've already met with the surgery coordinator, and I meet with the surgeon and the nutritionist in another 10 days. The coordinator estimates that I'll be ready for surgery right around the beginning of September. He's wrong about that, because I'm ready now--it's them that's not ready yet.:D

How old are your girls? Is your husband supportive?

Wow!!! So how's everything going for you so far? I am dying to meet the surgeon lol...it figures when you're so looking forward to something that time drags it's feet lol. I hate steroid injections. They work for me but only for 2 to 3 days then it's back to pain. I just hope with the incredible weight loss to come it stops. The hubs is really supportive, has always been. He's a good guy. Him and I are both going to all my appointments. It's funny cause we both turn 30 when I meet the surgeon lol, I'm 10 hrs older and our anniversary is May 19th the next day and we will be married 10 years. My kids are amazing. I sat down and already tal,ed with them about wls and they're happy. My oldest girl is going to be 9 in July, my middle girl will be 7 in June and my last little girl will be 2 in May. There a very energetic bunch both they're all sweet and loving and mommy's helpers. It's so nice hearing from you! Thanks for responding! Keep me updated on your process.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
