6 weeks - told to go back on fluid

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am new to forums. I had a gastric sleeve on 01 March 2017, and have lost 12kg since then (6 weeks). At 4 weeks my dr told me to go to solid foods, but I was finding I wasn't keeping any food down. I started eating potatoe chips (Chrisps) as it was the only thing I could keep down. I tried to speak to my surgeon but he just left a message for me saying to go back to fluids. What are other people's experience at 6 weeks and what can I expect? I am really struggling here.

First and foremost, nothing anyone says here should countermand your Surgeon. So if he said liquids, do liquids. If the only solid you can keep down is potato chips, then you are much better off with liquids anyway.

Every single surgery is different because all surgeons are different and all patients are different. It could be that you have something stuck in there, it could be that you have a bunch of inflammation still, it could be a stricture, it could be nothing at all. Did the doctor say how long to stay on liquids for this time?

What Wilderness said.

If things don't improve soon, they'll probably do some tests to see what the problem might be.

potato chips are a horrible idea and I'm sure that's why he has you going back to liquid stage. There is almost no Protein or nutritional value in those.

I had to go back to the liquid stage when I first transitioned to soft foods. I hated the pureed stage so I went back to liquid for a full 2 weeks. Took me to close to 8 weeks before I was trying out solids again. Good luck! I know it feels like this will never end but it WILL!!

I will be 6 weeks on Monday and have been able to eat soft foods, meats and nuts (soft nuts like pecans). I have only gotten sick once and I think that was from eating too quickly. With that said meats are difficult for me to eat because they don't taste good to me now. I hate that part of it but everything else is going well.

Do what your doctor ordered and you will get there soon.

Thanks for the replies. The surgeon didn't tell me how long. I have been able to keep down some Soups today so perhaps it is going to sort out. I will wait until I hear back from him. I guess I am just unsure if this is normal, to not be able to keep down most things. I feel like I am not eating enough to sustain myself.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
