Did you have to exercise up to 2hrs and 15mins or equivalent it to 5000 steps everyday to be cleared by your psych?

It's really pissing me off because I got cleared by both dietician and bariatrician, I just needed the ok from the psychologist. Ever since I started the program I haven't gained a pound and have lost every visit. I've increased my activity by a great deal yet, it feels like she makes it seem as if it's no effort. I exercise for 45mins and I'm very independent, so I clean, cook, etc. while standing. Anyways she's saying that ppl who get the surgery are encouraged to exercise up to 2hrs and 1/2....Has anyone else been told this?

2.5 hrs is new to me. Did you know this psych before your surgery?

Mine didn't get into exercise or anything, focused more on my reasons for eating (hunger, mainly), reason I want to lose weight (health, mainly), etc. but she's been my shrink for over 5 years.

Perhaps a second opinion? O

Sorry I meant she said 1hr and 15mins, then after surgery it should be up to 2hrs and 30s or 10000 steps. She's the psych with the weight clinic ugh lol

Hell no.

I was tripping out out...I told her most people don't exercise over an hr, but she's like in order to clear me it's either 5000 steps or 1hr and 15mins lol

I did have one person with the pre-op class saying that, but she wasn't a gatekeeper to the surgery, and nobody else said anything like that.

Admittedly that COULD be because I first followed her instructions and by doing so, finally qualified myself for a lovely total knee replacement surgery for which I am way too young. 🙄

Everyone's instructions are gonna differ here and there.

I don't remember exercise coming up at all during my psych eval.

My shrink didn't say anything of the sort! My Physical Therapist did mention 5000 steps, but only as a requirement, I've taken to heart. It's not mandatory for surgery at all. You should talk to the rest of your team about this.

The rest have cleared me, it's just her. I'm just gonna try and suck it up and try as much as possible. My bariatrician was like when do you feel like having surgery because you've done what you have to do, it's just up to psych. I understand that she wants me to succeed but I even asked her if I aim for 3000 or 4000 is it ok because of me being in a wheelchair? And she throws the curveball of we're aiming you to get to 10000 or 2 1/2hr. Im very fortunate that I'm able to walk with aids and stand, but what about others that can't?

The most ridiculous thing about it, the 10,000 steps a day is completely arbitrary and basically made up.

The most current research Ive hears of says that walking longer continues to add benefits up to 90 minutes per day. After 90 minutes, the benefits plateau and some other exercise type is recommended.

I had my psych eval in February 2017 and this did not come up at all. My doc has requested i walk 20 mins a day 2x a day. But tis all. Can you go to another psych? My doc doesn't have one so i got to choose one. But i still haven't heard of this requirement from any of the other patients. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!! she's 1 of 2 psychs there. I have no clue where the other one went. I'm just gonna tough it out and try to loose as much weight till May 2. And see what goes on, I have about 29 days so that should give me time to get my hussle on. I just wanted to know if anyone had to go through that, especially with a psych.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
