I chew gum. It seems like I have breath issues from the Protein so I chew gum to freshen my breath.

I work in a gastroenterology unit and we do not allow patients who are having endoscopies or anesthesia to chew gum prior to their test because it gets your GI juices flowing (acid). If you have no problem with heartburn or reflux, should be fine. If you do have issues, stay away from the gum.

My instructions say no gum because it could cause a blockage if swallowed.

I experimented with gum yesterday - at exactly 2 weeks post-op. Got my stomach juices flowing and just made me hungry.

I never asked but in my mind gum creates gas, so I've only allowed myself to chew it for a few minutes. I imagine that it's a mental thing, but I seriously think that gum fills your stomach with gas. I'm almost four months post op and I've only chewed gum like three times.

I was told we can chew gum as long as we don't swallow it.

I was told as long as I tolerate it I can chew it.

I quit smoking a few years ago and replaced it with ice cubes gum.

I was told no gum, but I'm always paranoid about my breath since I have to work so closely to people. I started using breath spay instead. So far, I haven't had any complaints about stinky breath, so I think it works.

I was told that yes, I can chew gum, but it's not recommended because the chewing gets your gastric juices flowing and it actually makes you feel hungry. I did try some, and that's exactly what happened, so I try to avoid it now, unless my breath is really bad, lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
