Struggling to get the weight off.

Hello, my name is Jaimie.

I am 25 years old, I weight currently 349lbs and I am 5'7". I was told before the surgery I need to be below 337. It is hard.

I did the 20grams low carb diet (Atkins) and it made me physically sick (Weak, nauseous with vomiting) and I had lost 17lbs then last month, but then I ended up stalling and gaining it back despite the diet. I was told to go on a liquid diet, and this is week two of it, and it sucks. I only lost 3lbs, plus aunt flo came. Because of my weight, I have been getting sick a lot, and I was told I am within the high risk. My surgery is supposed to be next month, though wasn't given a date. (I am on my parent's insurance until this June when I turn 26.)

This surgery is very important to me, but losing weight within a time period of not easy at all and it makes me worried they will say no to me, even when my insurance will say yes. I know the pre-op diet I will have no problem with, but my main question before the other questions.

Even if you are high risk, will they still do the surgery?

Was it easy to lose the weight within the time period before the surgery for a safe surgery?

I am getting to the point where I don't care about the risk, because it is that important to me. :56_anguished::53_cold_sweat:

The sick feeling is likely detox.

your body is so used to eating a certain way you are in withdrawals.

Make sure your are fueling yourself with high Protein 5 times a day. The small meals can help keep your blood sugar more stable (which may be causing the sick feeling).

Get Protein Shakes for 2 of those 5 meals (I personally love the pre made Premier Protein shakes- costco or Walmart has them).

Wean yourself. That's what pre op is about. And it's about preparing for post op. This is what you will have to eat like for a very long time to get to goal.

Exercise is important too. Walk or use an eliptical. Get your body prepared bc they expect you to walk literally hours after surgery and you want to be ready.

I started but cutting out sugar. After a week or so I realized I was just replacing that with carbs (chips, pretzles, etc). Once I had my first appointment, I said to myself, I'm going to lose this weight with or without the surgery and really cleaned up my act. Within a couple of weeks I eliminated all carbs and caffeine and started taking Vitamins.

the pre-op liquid diet is VERY important for shrinking your liver. The liver lies on your stomach and they need to lift it to perform the surgery. A small liver will make it less risky.

It looks like you don't have much more to lose to get you where's they want you. If you are following those liquid-diet guidelines you should be able to get that 12 pounds off before surgery.

12 pounds is fairly easy to lose if you go for walks and drink lots of Water. Exercise is very important as much as a healthy diet is.
May I recommend trying a Meal Replacement shake of sorts?
Everyone is very different so I can't state what worked for me but I know with just walking a good pace religiously you'll slowly see it coming off.
Also try not eating later in the evening :)

Most people that get the surgery have to go through the preop diet. It is the pits! I also felt sick at times on it, but found low sodium V8 veg. juice helped me.

If you are truly ready for the surgery, you will find a way to lose the weight. The Dr. knows this, so it is a test of sorts.

Get mad! You can do this!

Yes! I forgot water- its key to shedding pounds especially in detox. You want to flush it all out.

You can get drops, or crystal lite etc, but I would try to do half of your fluids as clear water- maybe with some lemon or lime slices.

I was freaking out last week because I was 7lbs away from my weight loss goal that I was required to lose in the next 5 days. Problem was I was already on my preoperative diet and was losing only about 2lbs a week. My dietician suggested upping my Water intake. I went from drinking 80oz of water to over 100oz and started dropping weight like crazy! Like 3lbs a day crazy! I ended up losing 9lbs instead of 7.

Water really does make all the difference.

I started losing weight in January and lost very well doing alternate day fasting. It helped me recognize different hungers but I could still eat foods I liked every other day. It's a good way to start and makes the liquid fast easier when you switch over. I lost about 20 pounds. I went to my nutritionist a month ago and she didn't want me to do the fast and Ive actually gained five pounds trying to eat "normal". Lol Anyway I'm on my liquid diet now and I lose if I keep to it. I have bad days but try and get back on today. Today when I went to my preop doc appointment I was up two pounds(my surgery is Monday!!!). I told the nurse that isn't much for me because depending on Water weight from my cycle or Constipation I can be 5 to 8 pounds heavier any given day. Next time I'm weighing naked;) lol Good luck and just do what you have to do to lose the weight and get surgery. You are almost there!

I had my surgery at 364 and in three weeks I'm already 338--and I'm only 5'5. Try the 20 net carbs again. Like someone else said, the sick feeling you had was more than likely the crap detoxing out of your body. When you know that, it makes it a little easier to go through. It should only last five to seven days, but afterwards you'll get energy like never before.

Try drinking a Premier Protein shake within an hour of waking up or eating a high Protein Breakfast. I think many of us fat people skipped breakfast, and other meals, which lead to a poor metabolism. By getting protein in your body within an hour of waking, your revving up your metabolism for the rest of the day. Also, make sure you're taking a B complex-50. It's a metabolism support Vitamin which helps a lot. You can do this. Good luck!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
