No control over weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I was talking to a co-worker today about their experience with weight loss, since having a ByPass. They said that you have no control over how much weight you lose, Your body just loses it ... so if you don't have more than 100 lbs to lose, it could be dangerous to have a by pass. I have never heard that before. Is this true? My hubby wants to lose 100 lbs. will he be able to stabilize the weight loss at that point?

Thank you for your input?

I don't think that is true. Plus the surgery team will keep tabs on all that but from what I've learned in the classes I am required to take prior to surgery you lose about 80% of what you need to lose. If you are under a certain bmi then you aren't a candidate. After a year or when you get to goal weight the calorie intake goes up. I have about 115 to lose and I don't fear losing too much. Just take what fat loss there is and build muscle to counter that and all shall be good.

Your coworker is misinformed. Few people lose "too much". On average RNY patients lose 70% of their EXCESS weight. You have to work hard to lose that much and very very hard to lose more than that.

I don't believe that is true, according to my surgeon there is a small percentege of patients that end up having difficulti kepping weight on. Not a general rule for all WLS patients.

Most patients seem to dip low and then settle at a bit higher weight.
I wouldn't worry until I got close and had problems. It is quite a process Best of luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
