Metimucil is my new best friend!!!

Recommended Posts

So from day 1 I took benefiber 3 times per day and the first few day I took Miralax and it just wasn't working.

I was going a little, but it wasn't regular or normal. My doc said not to do miralax bc it's just not natural compared to Fiber.

Well the benefiber did NOTHING. last Thursday, just at the 2 week mark, I bought sugar free metimucil powder. And FINALLY, I'm normal. Every day, once or twice a day since Saturday :) sorry tmi but I know it's a common problem.

i had VSG, so I can't do 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of Water bc you have to drink it fast- or it will thicken too much to drink. So I do 1 teaspoon in 4 oz of water. You still have to drink it quick (5-8 minutes), and then I have some clear fluids after. There are a few calories and carbs, but it is SO WORTH IT!

If you are suffering, try it. I don't love drinking it, but it's only 4 oz so I just do it knowing the results!

Thanks for the tip. Does it matter the temp of the Water? Or the time of day? Do you find it more affective to take in the morning?

I started Thursday night and then at morning and night on Friday and everyday since.

By Saturday I was good and I've been good since 👍🏻👍🏻

I'm trying for 2-3 times a day at the 1teaspoon (which is a 1/2 serving).

I've just used cool to cold Water either shaken in a water bottle or stirred in a cup.

Once you drink it you need to wash the cup out immediately or it will stick to the sides.

If you don't drink it quick it turns into a jel, which is I guess what it doesn't inside you and sort of cleans you out like root-rooter or draino. Lol. But it's important to drink it before it gets too thick. That's also why I do a clear liquid chaser afterwards. To make sure it's out of my esophagus and getting through my sleeve.

No stomach cramps or loose stool (sorry- but that's what I got with miralax 😱). It is gritty, but not too bad to get down.

Miralax sends me urgently to the toilet, and it takes a bunch of my fluids out along with it. Not cool.

Metamucil sounds pretty good..

Not cool is an understatement. That's exactly what happened to me. I hope the metimucil works for you too.

Yup I can also recommend Metimucil as well. It was what I used for the first 7-8 months post surgery to get me going regularly again. I don't do it much if at all now. I may take a glass full once every 3 to 5 weeks. But its the go to for when I'm not going regularly like I need to.

Anybody here have the opposite problem??? Too much diarrhea ! Help!!!

I tried a papaya enzyme early on and that helped with the Water like diarrhea poop. I don't take it anymore but I was on it for about three weeks before it helped make my stool not so freaking runny.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
