New Me 31317 25 Posted April 12, 2017 I am having serious issues with constipation… What are some good source of Fiber? I am just about a month out. Thank you
Berry78 4,261 Posted April 12, 2017 My favorite is called Fiber Smart by renew life. I get it from my chiropractor. I was just able to add it to my diet two days ago. 24 hours after taking the first scoop, I had my first unassisted BM! It comes in powder and capsules. I use the powder, mixed with my sweet chocolate Vitamins and coffee and/or milk... and it tastes like chocolate oatmeal. Yum! Takes at least an hour to get the 12oz down. My vitamins are GNC women's ultra mega.
mylighthouse 782 Posted April 12, 2017 Hello, Sorry to hear about your Constipation woes. I have been having horrible constipation too and have been to the ER a few times as well as hospitalized for a couple of days over 2 weeks ago. I am incorporating some high fiber foods into my diet as well as continuing to take Miralax everyday and now a prescription med for IBS/constipation. Here are the foods that I have added to my diet, though I cannot get a whole 1/2 cup serving in when I eat them. 1/2 cup Fiber One cereal= 11 grams net carbs, 14 grams fiber 1/2 cup cooked black Beans (from dry)= 11.57 grams net carbs, 8.3 grams fiber, 8 grams protein 1/2 cup cooked black eyed peas (from dry)= 13 grams net carbs, 4.1 grams fiber, 2.6 grams protein 1/2 cup cooked brussel sprouts (fresh)= 3.5 grams net carbs, 2 grams fiber 1/2 cup cooked broccoli (fresh)= 2 grams net carbs, 1.6 grams fiber I really like the Fiber One Cereal. My gastroenterologist and my surgeon both said they do not want me taking a fiber supplement. They want me to get my fiber naturally through food.
Berry78 4,261 Posted April 12, 2017 Have they mentioned why not to take a fiber supplement?
VSG4Mag 106 Posted April 12, 2017 I just started metimucil last Thursday night and by Saturday I've been going every day 1-2 times per day. I barely went for 2 weeks straight post op. I use the sugar free powder. Prior to surgery I used the capsules from costco but they are too big for me now with my new sleeve. I do 1teaspoon in about 4 oz of Water bc you have to drink it pretty fast. Within 5-8 minutes. Then I follow it with some clear fluids. I used benefiber from the day I left the hospital to prevent Constipation but it didn't work at all. I liked how it mixed with clear fluids and was basically tasteless, but it didn't do anything for me. I would like to get my fiber from food, but even pre op my diet was FULL of veggies and constipation was a problem, for years! My brother told me about it a couple of years ago and it's the BEST. VSG4Mag 106 Posted April 12, 2017 BTW- I take it 1-3 times per day when I'm due to drink clear fluids anyway.
mylighthouse 782 Posted April 12, 2017 @Berry78 No, they didn't say why. I have appointments with my gastro and my surgeon on the 18th of this month. I think I will ask them why they don't want me taking a fiber supplement. I am getting more fiber in my diet now then I was when I was just eating a small amount of non-starchy veggies, but I am still not getting enough. And I am still constipated. 1 Berry78 reacted to this

That is fine and dandy for them to say they would rather you have it in food but when you don't tolerate even small amounts of food I get mine from a powdered source and it works just fine without all the calories. 1 VSG4Mag reacted to this
Sherrie Scharbrough 311 Posted April 12, 2017 I have found that one of the best things for helping you go is this: Take dried prunes cover with Water and steep them until they are soft. Eat a few and drink some of the warm juice. YOU will go!! Years ago I worked in a retirement home as a baker. They always had stewed prunes on the line. If you didn't the oldsters would let you know that they needed their prunes. So any way everyday at our first break we would have Breakfast on the line also. Everyday I had a bowl of stewed prunes. It took me the longest to figure out why I got gas real bad and then I had to go Potty!! Those stewed prunes are the best if you are having problems. The key is to not let yourself get so bound up. Believe me it will make you go!! 1 Berry78 reacted to this
