My Hubby and I are going in for consult to have a GBP. He and I have made a list of questions for the doctor, that we meet up with in a couple days. This Dumping topic is a huge question. Ok, dumping happens from the body not being able to process sugars and excess fat. Does this dumping happen in the beginning, shortly after surgery, for a little while, for the 1st year or so? or, does this happen for the rest of our life? Does this mean that we can no longer ever have a spoon of ice cream and a bite of cake, ever?

So many questions. I also have a question about BM's. I read that some people get diarrhea, is it controllable? Can the Diarrhea be uncontrollable, happens for no reason with no time to wait type thing?

I don't know for sure but I'm pretty certain that dumping is a lifetime issue. However there are people on this forum who state that they don't seem to get dumping at all.. everyone is different.
That said, a regular size bite of cake probably wouldn't cause dumping Once you start having pieces of cake, then it becomes an issue. Personally I'd rather have dumping to keep me honest and on track.

I think if a person is being very good, and they are at a gathering where everyone is being served cake. Taking a small bite should suffice. I am not a sweets eater, so 1 bite would not lead to more. My weakness is salty/spicy/crunchy stuff. So would something so small cause that drastic dumping thing? Will artificially sweetened things cause the dumping, like a Choc. Protein Shake?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
