Unable to get food down & not enough protein

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I'm new here so I apologize in advance if this isn't the appropriate place to post this topic!

I'm 18 years old and I got the gastric sleeve on March 27, 2017. I've been having no problem drinking Water and getting my clear fluids in, but whenever I drink anything thicker it feels extremely heavy in my stomach. Additionally, I was scheduled to begin puree yesterday and I had scrambled eggs mixed with cottage cheese for lunch, and chicken puree for dinner. I feel extremely sick and am feeling deterred from eating any other pureed food as I still feel sick from yesterdays. Everything I try to eat seems to make me nauseous.

Since I am 18 years old, I live with my mother. I know she means well and is worried about me, but she is constantly asking me if I have had enough Protein. I don't know what to do because I feel like it's physically impossible for me to consume that much now no matter how hard I try. The lack of protein over the past weeks has been getting to me as well, I feel dizzy and tired all the time.

Does anyone have any tips on light foods that pack a lot of protein in them?

Hello!

You're just fine. I was sleeved on March 31st and I am in the same state. I was concerned but my surgeon explained it and said it is okay. For now:

#1 get enough liquids in. If you can't get Water down try some mio drops (non caffeinated) or some low cal gatorade. I have found it sits easier in my pouch than just plain water (plain water feels very heavy to me).

#2 THEN focus on Protein

Your insides are healing, and there is a lot of swelling, and it prevents you from getting in all of the liquids you need. It was taking me a full day of sipping to drink 32 oz. As of yesterday... I can drink a 17oz bottle of water in about an hour. You will notice a significant difference when the swelling goes down and it starts to become easier. Dehydration is a high risk for you right now, so make sure you get in at least 32oz a day and keep working on the protein.

Just keep working on it. I have really made an effort to have a bottle of gatorade in my hand at all times so that I can keep working on it.

Today I drank:

3 premier Proteins

34oz of water

And i'm stuffed. I can't possibly put anything else into myself.

The Premier Protein shakes are the best for me. They are 30 grams of protien each and packed with Vitamins.

In the beginning it took me over an hour to sip one down, but now it's about 40 minutes. I try to do 2 each day.

I drink Gatorade G2, but I Water it down. I like it better then the MIO drops (personally- so many friends love them). So I will pour the Gatorade into 3 different empty 16z bottles of water and then water it down. I do this bc the Gatorade still has calories and carbs and I'm trying to keep my carbs down as low as possible and don't want excess empty calories.

I will drink plain water, but I find it hard too.

I get my premier Protein from costco. chocolate, vanilla and bananas and cream. They have strawberry and caramel on line. I've heard that Walmart may carry it too in 4 packs. It is WAY more paletable for me then any other protien shake so far. I just haven't found a powder that isn't gritty and gross - but again it's so personal, my friend will ONLY drink the powders.

Vitamins are important too. I use Patches (patchmd.com) and today was the first time since surgery I didn't wear them...and I felt like crap. Needed a nap and if I wasn't visiting family, I would have stayed asleep...so I think they are helping with my energy. The patches I love bc it's one less thing to factor into my day of "eating" and drinking.

But get in you FLUID! Dehydration is one of the most frequent complications from surgery and it can be prevented (most of the time) with some effort. And believe me, I feel you, it was effort. I set alarms to remind myself to take sips and eat. lol.

I hope you feel better. It takes some time, but focus on healing and the protien and fluids will help the healing.

If you are having this much trouble, maybe you should go back to Protein Shakes for a few days. If you can't stomach a Premier Protein ready-made shake (my favorite), then try some Isopure No-Carb mixed with Water. I didn't like that as much back when I was at that stage, but they were a little thinner than the Premier.

Meeting your Protein and water goals is key to success in this journey. Do whatever you have to do to meet these goals...

Good luck!

I have not had my surgery yet. Mine is on April 25. I have been trying different Protein  drinks. I like the nectar brand. They have different fruit flavors. I like the lemonade the best. They do not seem as heavy as the premier and they have 23 grams of Protein and no carbs.

Eas, Pure Protein, Body Fortress and LiquidCel. Try Atkins protein H20

But some Fairlife milk and "water" down the Premier Protein shakes. Fairlife milk has a good amoumt of Protein and it will make it thinner so you may have a better chance of hetting it down.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
