Workout sharing - post op

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am now two weeks out of surgery and itching to go back to the gym.

While I know I can't go back until my Doctor's permission, I would love to hear from you about any recommended workout routines to "get back into it" and ease back lightly before going back to my regular work outs.

Thank you!

First, you have to realize that everyone heals differently. I had NO pain after my surgery and healed pretty quickly. Also, just because you feel healed, doesn't mean your insides are. My recommendation would be to start with walking, as far as you can, as often as you can. My dr. cleared me at 5 weeks to go back to the gym but to make sure I listened to my body. I am 8 weeks out and feel like I am now at about 90% recovery. I get tired a lot more easily which is understandable considering what my body has been put through. Some people bounce back right away, some it takes months. Your body has to adjust to the new calorie restriction and has to learn to regulate itself - it takes some time. Good luck!

Understood and agreed however as mentioned i am hoping to get some good workout routines from other sleevers to help ease back into the workout mode when ready. No one can expect to exercise the same way that we did before the sleeve - because of the surgery but also because it has been some time since we have worked out (and perhaps others not at all).

I am hoping for some light exercises etc or workout routines that people used when they were allowed to go back to the gym :) . Walking i have been doing since day one however walking does not a workout make ;)

In any case, if anyone has some good workouts to share I (and i'm sure others) would be very welcome to receive!

I'm 14 months out, but when I first had surgery I walked on the treadmill for 30 at and incline of 3, and did the bike for 30. My very first day in the gym was 4 days after surgery. No weights just light/slow cardio. From there I started branching out into weight training and cycle (spin class) or Zumba. Anything to get the body moving

I have a stretchy resistance band that I use instead of weights. I'm a week out and still in the "no lifting 15lbs" zone per my doctor. I like the light resistance the band gives me. I get a great workout in my arms.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
