Hi. I am having my sleeve surgery in June. I am a complete carb-aholic! I have decided to cut my carbs now, so I'm not doing it all at once. My problem is, what do you eat for Breakfast? And what types of foods contain "good" carbs? I am completely ready to do this, but I just need the knowledge of how to do it RIGHT!

I'd been doing the Paleo diet on-and-off for the past year and it really gets you ready to get rid of carbs, for the most part. If you follow the guidelines of "if a caveman couldn't have eaten it due to it being the results of modern technology, then I'm not going to either", it removes a vast majority of the carbs in our day-to-day lives.

Focus on meats first, veggies, and fruits and you'll be full without needing too many carbs. This is what we'll be doing after being sleeved so why not start it now?!

Breakfast in the beginning will probably be Protein Shakes.

Then as you go on to pureed foods you can do scrambled eggs and I found a really great plain greek yogurt that is very low carb made by HEB. I would just add a little bit of stevia to it to sweeten it. Cottage cheese is also a good low carb breakfast idea.

I am almost 5 months post op, so I am on regular foods. I like to keep my carbs low and my Protein around 100 grams a day, it really helps me lose weight.

So, if I want to incorporate a bit of carbs into my diet, I go with veggies like fresh cooked beets, fresh cooked carrots or brussel sprouts. I stay away from all bread, Pasta, rice, potatoes (even sweet potatoes). And of course when you get to regular foods, you can eat some of the no carb veggies. Remember, that you always want to fill up on protein first when eating, so you really aren't going to have much room for other foods.

Proteins will keep you full longer. Carbs will lead you to be hungrier for more food and too many of them will keep you from losing weight.

I'm definitely going to try this. I am so ready to make a change, but I KNOW giving up carbs is going to be hard. I've already given up soda, and I am dojng very well with sweets, this is my last...and hardest hurdle!

Is flavored greek yogurt a no no? I thought that as long as the protein was higher than the sugar content it was ok. I hope my nut teaches me these things, she hasn't been very helpful yet. I am planning on finding a dietician after surgery(someone on here recommended that instead of a nut)

Sweets is definitely my nemesis, too! I've got two teenage boys and carbs / crap is all they eat! Doing the post-op liquid-only diet took a huge amount of willpower to struggle through.

My wife's friend had the sleeve done 18 months ago (give or take) and her doctor told her that an occasional sweet treat was perfectly fine. The catch is that you don't have it anywhere NEAR as often as we've done in the past and nowhere NEAR as much quantity as we've done in the past. If you're at a birthday party or special occasion, have a bite or two of cake/whatever. Fortunately, that'll be about all we'll be able to have.

As with everything, moderation. The sleeve will be there to keep us from going overboard...as long as we don't put in liquid calories that go right through like milkshakes, etc.

I can stay away from sweets, my main problem is bread and pizza! I won't even have a BITE of pizza, because I KNOW I won stop at just a bite or just sometimes. It would be ALL the time.

Most flavored yogurt probably is too high in sugar and carbs. At least I sure couldn't find any that were acceptable for me.

So I went with the plain Greek, and I really had to dig around to find a low carb one of those too.

Great. I have never tried plain yogurt of any kind. What about Yoplait Greek 100?

Steak or a pork chop. If I have a small steak I might have an egg.

Early on I had a shake. Then later I had baked fish.

Your first meal of the day doesn't have to be breakfast food.

Grilled fish for breakfast! Girl Scouts do it better... A lot of cultures have fish for breakfast, like people that live on islands...

Yes Japanese do .. when in Japan
My grandmother made it for me .. the breakfast is similar to lunch & dinner only lighter.. grilled Saba / mackerel/ salmon / hamachi

For preop diet I had stuff like this...

- Meatballs.. with egg and instead of bread crumbs using almond meal

- String cheese, block cheese (cheddar mostly)

- Almonds (ate too many of these and gave me hemorrhoids)

- Peanuts (unsalted), Peanut Butter

- Scrambled eggs with tbsp of ketchup or block cheese melted into it

- Other ideas:

- Peanut butter Cookies using almond flour and stevia

- pizza using almond flour, block cheese, low carb meat sauce, and ground beef or other non processed meats

- Take a cow home and gnaw on it for a bit

My first week or so home post op I already have ready:

- 1 percent milk (less fat no diff in carbs)

- YOP yogurt drink (only until solids.. more carbs than I'd like)

- unsweetned apple sauce (might add cinnamon if tolerable)

- SF Jello

- ice cubes.. already like chewing them anyways

- Duff Beer

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
