PureDarkness 10 Posted April 9, 2017 On the 5th of August 2015 I had a sleeve gastrectomy. I was in hospital for four days (1 extra day due to an infected cannula), then to my surprise I was sent home with these horse pill sized antibiotic tablets (I wasn't supposed to be taking any tablets at that stage). The tablets hurt to swallow, and made me throw up more than once. Eventually I took my chances and stopped taking them, but I think that the damage was done. I've had a string of problems since then. About six months ago I started noticing that swallowing hurt, sometimes to the point where I was doubled over from chest pains. It seems to just be getting worse. Now, I've recently been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, which was definitely not present at the time of the sleeve op. I also have to take the highest safe dose of anti-reflux medication just to keep the reflux under control. When I finally got in to see my surgeon he recommended that the hernia is repaired, but the more I think about it and read online about treatment options, I think it might be better to just convert the sleeve to a bypass in the hope of not needing any more operations. Does anyone have any experience with hiatus hernias after gastric sleeve surgery? If you do I'd like to get your thoughts on this as I'm pretty much at my wit's end. Thanks in advance

GassyGurl 428 Posted November 1, 2017 I now have a hiatal hernia 3.5 years after sleeve op. I've thought about converting, but think I might just have hernia repaired. I'm worried about malabsorption Can they actually repair it? I was under the assumption they wouldn't /couldn't repair after Bariatric surgery. But I don't know why. Berry78 4,261 Posted November 1, 2017 They can repair it. (If it were me, I would prefer a repair to a conversion to bypass).

Mytimenow17 99 Posted November 9, 2017 What is Hernia? Why does it come? I had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as the sleeve, and I also get the pains in my throat and chest, which I think is due to eating too fast, too much, or bigger bites and not chewing up the food like I should. Because I don’t have that problem with My surgery was on 9/11/17. I had been told I had a hernia, severe reflux, and my esphogus was even corroding at the bottom. Have had to cut out all sodas and carbonation.
