Hi everyone, I've been reading for a while but never posted.

I am currently 3 appointments away from completing all my pre-surgery requirements. My Dr. says I need to drop 14lbs before surgery. I was wondering if any of you have had their thyroid removed? I had mine taken out about 7 years ago and my weight gain just escalated from there. My concern was the 14lbs but so far I'm doing great. I don't have a surgery date yet and have started seriously cutting back. No sodas, very minimal carbs, Protein drinks during the day and a very light high Protein meal for dinner. I've lost 8lbs in 6 days. I worry about how I'll do after surgery and if anyone has heard how those with no thyroid do after surgery. Its typically extremely hard for me to lose even a few pounds. Thanks for any feedback and good luck to everyone.

I also have no thyroid, had it removed in 1984 due to thyroid cancer. I hope to have my surgery scheduled in August. I would also like to learn what others have to say about their experiences.

I still have my thyroid but I have hypothyroidism. I take 200mg of synthroid a day and I'm 14 weeks post op. I'm losing very slowly because of my thyroid and PCOS. I've only lost 40lbs. I'm still losing but it's just slower so I will accept the loss and keep moving forward to get to my goal. My doc said it will probably take 18 months for me to reach my goal of losing 100 lbs. If you are on medication for thyroid your weight loss will likely be slower but you will still lose. My thyroid is basically useless, it's the meds keeping me trucking along. Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

You lost your first 40 pounds a tad bit more quickly than I did. You lost 40 pounds in 14 weeks, whereas it took me an entire 4 months to lost my first 40 pounds.

I still have a thyroid, but have been hypothyroid for 12 years due to radioiodine ablation. It took me approximately 18 months to lose 100 pounds, so I was a slow loser. However, I am pleased that I have been able to easily maintain my current body weight of 118 pounds with daily exercise and an intake of about 2000 calories per day.

So, while I was a slow loser, the sleeve did reset my metabolism in a favorable way.

I'm hypo as well and take 200 micros of thyroxine a day. Reduce on weekends now though due to my weight loss after vsg.
I had no issues losing and was nearly at goal weight around 2-2.5 months after my op. Being a low BMIer. But have been stuck for ages at my current weight. Sleeved 5/ dec 16.
Thyroid getting tested again this week

What was your starting BMI / weight ?
Do you still take 200 mg ?

I was hypo and I never wanted to take Synthroid, I didn't want to put my thyroid to sleep. Now I'm 10 weeks pOP and I'm thyroid healthy, don't be fooled by taking synthroid, especially when you're overweight and that's causing it. Went from 5.9 to 3.9.

Since I had thyroid cancer, I had to have my entire thyroid removed. So I will be on med for life. Still need to have it checked regularly to monitor med level. Just curious if that will cause me to lose more slowly.

kbellakat: are stats are very similar. Do you have a surgery date scheduled?

I had my thyroid removed in 2005. I had GB on 11/14/16. I've lost 60 pounds with no problems. I have to keep an eye on my thyroid level as the weight loss will definitely require changes in the medicine you take. Everyone is different but I think you will do just fine. Keep up the great work!!!

You sound like me. How much did you have to lose total? But I was diagnosed hypothyroidism at 16, nearly 30 years ago. I'm an under 40 BMI, so I'm curious about how much you lost in those 2.5 months [emoji4]

Our thyroids are already "sleepy" because they are sluggish, that's why we take the Synthroid! Being overweight does not cause hypothyroidism, it's a symptom of it. 5.9 is not hypothyroidism technically, you need an 8 (most doctors over a 10) or it's just mild hypothyroidism and typically not treated with medication. I was not given an option to take medication because I was very ill. I'm happy things worked out for you but there is no cure for true hypothyroidism, we will need medication for life.

My doctor did say as I lose weight my dosage might drop or it might not, we just have to wait and see. I am 38 and have been diagnosed since 21. My level was also in the 13's. Slower weight loss is a very normal thing for low thyroid patients but it's not like it doesn't come off. You could be lucky and it might not bother it at all. If you are patient you will reach goal. It's not a race! [emoji16]

I forgot to add my stats.

HW: 255

CW: 215

Height: 5'4

Sleeved 12/29/16

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
