Weight Watchers post-op?

Recommended Posts

I had a follow-up visit with my surgeon last week (I'm four months out) and was telling her how I'm having a problem with taking medication for insomnia, becoming a little cloudy mentally after about 45 minutes, and then getting out of bed to eat even though I'm not hungry and have brushed my teeth etc. I was simply letting her know this and asking for her advice (I'm already addressing this with the medication prescriber and my therapist). I also told her I'd joined a mindful eating group associated with her practice with the intention of addressing this behavior. She suggested that I get more external support like joining Weight Watchers. I was quite taken aback by this, as the WW points system isn't aligned at all with what the NUT I see (also associated with her practice) has me doing. I didn't say anything in the moment, but I think this was an inappropriate suggestion. I'm already logging everything I eat and exercising almost daily. I was a Weight Watchers member for years and found that people with bariatric surgeries aren't treated that well (I never told anyone there that I had a lap-band because I didn't want to be judged). Has anyone else's surgeon or NUT recommended that they join WW post-op? Is anyone doing WW post-op? How's it going?

My Surgeon would never. If I needed a support group, they have one there. I would never see that Dr again. That is a crazy suggestion.

Also I wouldn't feel it would be fair for me to show up to WW with my tiny stomach, where I can easily eat normal to small portions and be satisfied and other people are struggling with a normal sized stomach. Not to mention the big losses I have. Then when you add in the points system, which doesn't align with how I eat all, it would be a disaster and I would feel like a fraud, just no.

Thank you, outsidematchinside, for your feedback. I've been pretty ticked off about the WW suggestion and her general lack of support in the follow up appointment. She said other stuff that set off a spiral of self-doubt- like that I can expect to get to a previous low of 178 in a way that sounded like she doesn't anticipate that I'll get lower. I've been telling myself that people with good scalpel skills aren't necessarily trained to be empathic or experts in the emotional side of obesity. F*ck her.

I feel like a lot of Surgeons are cautious not to set goals for people too low, but you aren't even 6 months. you have a long time we can keep losing.

I haven't found anyone skilled with counseling post-op WLS patients. Especially someone that has lost as much as me. I just had to work through my own issues, luckily I have been able to do it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
