Nervous at Two Days Pre-Op

Recommended Posts

I am two days from my surgery and feeling quite anxious at moments. I usually turn Scarlett O'Hara and decide to think about stress later, but it is now later. I'm not second guessing my decision in any way, but I am struggling with nerves whenever I realize it will involve being poked by needles and worse. I have an irrational fear of hollow needles I am slowly overcoming, but I have not mastered yet. I don't want to embarrass myself in front of all those nurses and doctors by having to psych myself up to holding my arm down for the prick that I know isn't terrible but I still fear.

How did you calm yourself in the final lead-up to your surgery?

Well I personally am not afraid of needles, but just wanted to let you know that they insert 1 pic line into your arm or hand and leave itcthere forvthe duration. Well most surgeons do. This way the only needle you get is the first one, after that everythibg gets inserted into your line, you dont even feel it. Also, maybe you can,ask them to put you to sleep first then insert your line, just a thought. Good Luck!!!!

I never had a fear of needles, however when it was time for the iv, I was a hard stick and had to be poked twice, IT WASNT easiest thing to deal with but it wasn't overly painful either. I had to get a a heperan shot in my belly also. It is so worth it! you will be fine.

Trust me - there is no way you can embarrass yourself. I put IVs in people all the time and I've seen grown men covered in tattoos with tears streaming down their face when I tell them I have to insert an IV.

Don't worry about it your care team has seen everything.

The anesthesiologist gave me a small shot of lidocaine so I couldn't feel the IV insertion. It was wonderful!

I guess it is mind over matter. I'm not scared of needles even though I'm ”hard to stick”. I used to sell my plasma in college. I was surprised they gave me the contract to read and sign while I was waiting on the anesthesia. They were surprised I fell asleep reading it!

It is okay to be nervous. Don't worry you have done everything correct. The work is going to pay off. You made a decision to better your existence so don't fret embrace your inner self and cheer your outer self on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
