Hello/intro and excitement! Psych eval - done!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I'm Sarah, age 30, from northern Illinois, and it looks like I will be getting the DS this late summer! That is my track so far. One of my good friends got the sleeve last summer, and then summer activities were harder than ever for me, so I said enough is enough and went to her support group with her this January. I was inspired to get a referral from my PCP and now here I am, on the path to surgery!

I went in asking for RNY, but the surgeon - one of the best in the region, I understand - suggested the switch for me, thinking I am a great candidate for it, and could have great success. He thinks I can do 100 lbs. in 3-4 months post-op! I'm so excited, and my family and friends are thrilled for me, and I have learned SO MUCH in the last couple of months. I'm nervous, too, as anyone sane would be, but I think this is just the thing I need to get my active life back!

Anyway, I just wanted to officially say hello! I had my mandatory psych eval today, and it went really well. I filled out a 338-question MMPI2 test and then talked to the psychologist for about 20 minutes, and he said I'm a great candidate and he'd like to recommend me for the surgery! I had been so nervous about the psychologist, but it was really simple and non-stressful. I have my first appointment with the dietitian next week on the 11th, and that will be the first official day of my 3-month required pre-op! My surgeon ballparked mid-August for my surgery, if all goes well!!!

Congratulations on starting your journey! I had a 6 month required pre-op, and I am completing my last requirement on Monday 4/10, so then it will all be submitted to insurance. Don't get discouraged by all the requirements, just do one step at a time and you will be there before you know it. This is a great board, lots of info and really awesome people!

Welcome!

I'm not familiar with your surgery since I had VSG, but I am familiar with your excitement :)

I'm a bit over 2 weeks post op and I feel great.

Goos luck with the rest of your prep:)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
