PSA: Chicken Soup Protein Mix

Recommended Posts

My experience with the chicken Soup Protein mix by Unjury: I've been trying different protein mixes in preparation for surgery. I got a couple packets of the chicken soup thinking it would be nice to have the choice of soup broth. I used my keurig to put hot Water in a mug then mixed the chicken soup packet in. No matter how much I mixed it, it kept forming a thick, curdish layer on the top which was awful. I kept thinking it just wasn't blending so I kept trying. In the time it took to stop stirring and bring the cup to my mouth the curds would form. I couldn't drink it but I tried enough times and had to spit out globs of protein mix that it makes me sick to even think about trying the same flavor again.

I found out later that if the water is too hot it changes the texture of the mix. I have one other packet, hoping maybe if I wait long enough I'll be able to try it with cooler water without getting nauseated at the thought.

Hopefully this helps someone else who tries this thinking they'll have a nice hot cup of broth!

They sell them in individual serving packets, which is what I got instead of a big container, thank goodness. It may be good if it's mixed in the right temp, I just can't bring myself to try it yet, lol. It has to be less than 140 degrees I think is what the website said when I read it after the fact, although I didn't think the keurig makes drinks that are that hot, but maybe.

140 degrees was too cold for me to enjoy it as Soup. I didn't like it!

That's what I'm thinking. I want my Soup to be hot.

Totally. The first stage post op is hard enough without drinking unpleasant things!

I agree that clumps of Protein Powder is gross (I've only had that with cold Quest Protein powders), but there is a way around it. I haven't used this mix as it's impossible to get or ship to Japan, but I have mixed unflavoured protein powder into Soups. There's no need to drink them cold! First, thoroughly mix the protein powder in some cool Water or Soup (just enough to mix it up). Then add it to the rest of your soup (or water, in this case) and slowly heat it up back to a temperature that's agreeable to you (but probably not boiling). There should be no clumps involved at all!

I got a sample, so what I did was put a cup of Water in the microwave and heated it up for about 45-1 min. I think took a meat thermometer to read the temp (trying to stay under the 140, but warm enough)...anyway, that gave me a guideline of how to make it without it being too hot. Once the water was at the temp -- I dumped the Soup mix in and stirred. It worked fab. Hope this tip helps somebody else trying it for the first time. I think it was something like 120 degrees.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
