Concerned about nausea after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am having my gastric sleeve on April 25. My main concern is the nausea after surgery. Also I am a mother/baby nurse and work 12 hour shifts. I am taking off 3 weeks. My doctor said I could go back after 1 week, but I don't know if I can work 12 hours just eating liquids? Any other nurses go back to work after 1 week?

12 hours of work one week after surgery could be a lot. I went back to work 5 days after surgery, but my shift is considerably shorter and I'm not on my feet the way a nurse is. I think you'd be best off taking the 3 weeks you planned on, and getting plenty of recovery time while you adjust. You'll be walking as much as you can, so that'll prepare you for the long shift when you do go back. That's my humble opinion :)

I never had nausea. That shouldn't be your concern, energy should.

You will have bursts of energy then you will get tired very soon.

A nurse? you would need a month to 6 weeks of, especially working 12 hour shifts.

Unless you are a phone nurse, this is pure insanity.

I took 4 weeks, but probably only needed 3 and I work as an admin assistant 7 hours a day. Energy will be a probably for you I'd say. I did have nausea at night time the first couple weeks too. It was manageable but would have sucked to have to work through. Good luck.

I am an L&D nurse and I'm only taking a week off. Probably not smart, but I need to save my PTO. I get sleeved tomorrow!

There is no way you're going to be able to handle 12 hour shifts after only a week. If you can take more time do it now. Take at least two weeks.

I'm feeling like the 2 1/2 weeks I took as an ER nurse weren't enough. My surgical group usually has bedside nurses out for at least four weeks.
