Do I have to use the NUT at the Bariatric Surgeons office?

Recommended Posts

Her fee is $300 which I find to be too expensive. She doesn't take insurance even though my plan covers other nutritionist visits. Is there a way around this?

I would call your insurance company and ask if you need to use your surgeon's NUT, my guess, is NO. Also, that is crazy she doesn't take insurance! My nut was with my surgeon and included.

Thanks for your reply. I thought that I would only have to pay a copay fee every time I saw the NUT; I was floored when I was told otherwise. I will take your suggestion and call my insurance company.

Yeah some surgeons only want their nutritionist. Which I think is pretty jacked up and doesn't make sense but I think they do it because the surgeon has a direct communication line with his nutritionist in case there is a problem. As well as knowing that his nutritionist is teaching you all of his requirements to ensure you have a successful journey.

You should ask your surgeon and your insurance company.

I chose not to use my surgeon's NUT for the same reason. I found one that was covered at 100% by my insurance company. My insurance said I can use anyone in network or even my PCP, so long as they record my weight and "plan" each time. I didn't ask my surgeon, just assumed it was okay because that was an insurance thing in my case, not his prereq.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
