Most everyone is cleared for coffee early on as long as its Decaf. People react differently, but for myself I've been more sensitive to caffeine since surgery (and I was a caffeine freak prior to surgery). I have to do 75% decaf and 25% regular. That doesn't bother me, but if I drink too much or do 50/50 it gives me an upset stomach. Might be best to start with decaf and see if that bothers you any and go on from there.

I agree with orionburn, it is best to start with Decaf. That's what I did.

Then my nutritionist cleared me for regular coffee at 12 weeks post op. She said to start slowly, which I did. I handled it just fine and now at 4 and a half months post op, I drink 1-3 cups of coffee a day.

But I have read where some people's nuts or doctors don't want them getting back on the caffeine at all, so your best bet is to check with them.

I'll chime in with another recommendation for Decaf. My surgeon said coffee/tea are something I could have right away, but he recommended staying away from caffeine because it tends to dehydrate, and that's the last thing we need after bariatric surgery.

I am 3 weeks post-op...when can I have coffee?

I was addicted to Starbucks prior to surgery (done last week). I gave it up 2 weeks prior so I wouldn't be suffering with the withdrawals as I was healing.

I use the Patch MD vitamin patches and saw that B12 was supposed to boost energy.

I'm happy (and surprised) to say that I haven't had a coffee in more then 3 weeks and I feel good. It's probably the lack of carbs keeping my blood sugar more stable...I've never had diabetes, but I saw my energy plummet after carbs & sugar. But I'm thinking the Vitamins help too.

I was cleared for coffee immediately, but it was something that was discussed with my team right away. No coffee increases my risk of committing a felony against family members, especially in the morning.

Just FYI, the idea that coffee does not contribute towards your hydration goals is pure myth that seems to persist among many doctors and nutritionists despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. It is true that coffee has a diuretic effect, however it is short lived, and it has minimal impact on your hydration. In fact, studies have shown that the hydration effect from drinking coffee is similar to drinking Water.

This isn't something you have to take my word for, though. A few Google searches and you'll find study after study that confirms this.

My Surgeon and my Nutritionist either one said anything about giving up my coffee. I would have been one to commit HAIRY SCARY!!! I love my coffee. I have my Espresso with GENEPRO unflavored Protein every day. It has 30grams of protein so for me it is a WIN WIN because I would drink my Espresso any way. I would say whatever your Dr.'s guidelines are follow them. You could ask them when and if you can have full blown coffee!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
