Pre op patient with a ? for post op patients

Recommended Posts

Am on day 8 of my pre op diet and am so so so hungry all the time but am sticking to it. Am not talking about emotional hunger but genuine tummy rumbling hunger.

My ? Is does this go away post op? A friend swears from the start she has only been honestly hungry a hand full of times post op the surgery. I can deal with the emotional hunger but I don't know if I can go another month dealing with tummy rumbling all the time .

Yes, you will not be hungry too often after surgery, although the rumbling still is there. Not due to hunger, but the intestines processing the food through. It goes away after a while I'm told.

I'm 3 months out and I'm very rarely hungry. The only times I find myself genuinely hungry is if I skip a meal or go a long period of time between meals. I try and eat about the same time every day 8, 12, 6 and a snack at 10 and 8 per my dietician but if I skip lunch say and go 8 am to 6pm I get genuinely hungry.

@Elizabethtash

I was one of those who WAS hungry after surgery. I was sooooo disappointed and angry that I was feeling so hungry for weeks after surgery. And then suddenly (I would say around 6-8 weeks post-op), the hunger literally stopped. At 2,3,4 months post op I had such little hunger that I would have to make myself stop and eat. Then, at 5 and now 6 months post-op, I get hungry but not at all like the feeling just before and after surgery. Now it is like a healthy "reminder" type of hunger feeling. I'd say about every 4 hours I get a signal of hunger that is easily soothed by eating a small something of Protein. Then it's satisfied! It makes life so much easier. Before surgery and up to two months after surgery I had such terrible, gnawing, relentless hunger that made me crazy.

I'm telling you this because I wish I had known, while I was prepping for surgery, that some people remain ravishingly hungry for a few weeks after surgery. I truly thought something was wrong with me and my sleeve. Hopefully you get through with less hunger but please know that if you don't it's OK, it's normal, and I've read many accounts like my own who struggled with post-of hunger for weeks.

Good luck to you! And know that no matter what you feel in the early stages, by the time you are several months out, you will have a new, much healthier appetite!

I'm over 2 years out and my tummy STILL rumbles daily! It's become a joke in the office. Everyone just says Bob, my tummy's name, is talking again. As for the hunger, I'm still NEVER hungry. On the weekends I totally forget to eat until hubby asks me if I've eaten anything.

My stomach has been growling post op but I am not hungry. Remember your stomach is smaller now :)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
