Is it possible to lose TOO much and be rejected?

Recommended Posts

I am stressing myself out about losing too much weight and being rejected. My insurance requires a BMI of 40 to be considered. Mine is currently 47.5. I have a 3 month diet, and if I lose more that 40 pounds my BMI is going to drop to 39. I am so worried that I will have gone through this for nothing. 3 days into my diet and I am already down 3 pounds. Not complaining, I want to lose as much as possible for surgery to reduce lose skin and build good eating/exercise diets NOW rather than post op,

I am just so stressed thinking that I could possibly lose too much. Is this possible? Has this ever happened to any one? I have aetna.

Side note: I do not have any obesity related diseases so the need for surgery is based solely off my BMI.

My surgeon did put my most recent weight on my submittal to insurance. I didn't lose too much in those 2 months though so I was about 41 BMI at time of submitting.

I was also worried about it because I was on the cusp of 40 BMI. My doctor told me that insurance looks at your original BMI as the qualifying BMI. I was approved even though my BMI dipped down to 39.5 after the supervised diet.

The first weigh in is what they go by or should be going by. I wouldn't worry.

@kins117 I'm surprised they submitted your current. Did they say that in the beginning of your program?

They usually go by your recent documented w dr ... I was worried about that too because I'm right at 40 BMI.. before losing .. because tend to below 40 when I try to lose weight even 5 or 10 pounds..
I've been diagnosed w sleep apnea & now fluctuating high blood pressure.. that's what caused me to look into the sleeve surgery

I would say call your insurance provider and ask.
Or ask your doctors office, I am sure they have encountered this before.
Last option, don't loose too much weight before surgery [emoji6]

I talked to my patient advocate and she said it shouldn't be a problem but I am still worried about it ya know? Maybe I should call my insurance. I guess worst case scenario I can lose as little as I can. I don't have a certain number that I have to lose I just have to lose. So I hoping that I can lose as much as I can and still be approved.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
