Band revision for 5/31/17

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This is my first post so I'm very new here. I'm having my lapband out this Wednesday and going for the sleeve 5/31/17. I was looking for some advice/information from people who have lived through the whole procedure already.

I'm currently 205 and gaining no matter what I do. I'm so stressed out that I'll gain a lot of weight between 3/29 and 5/31 that it's all I can think about!

I have PCOS and Insulin Resistance and also, I have my wedding this October.

I know I'm smaller than most people who have gotten the sleeve but I've struggled my entire life and I'm ready to get this tool to help me finally succeed, as the band did nothing for me except make me throw up every day for the last 2 years.

Does anyone suffer from the same things (PCOS & IR) as me? Have you found success?

Any advice from anyone is much, much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Amanda

I had my band out in December and my sleeve was done last week. Like you, I also have PCOS. The band removal was a super simple surgery; the sleeve surgery was a bit harder. I did gain 5lbs between the band removal and sleeve procedures. But, after I had healed from the band removal, I did go a little crazy for a week or two. If you stick to a normal, healthy diet you won't gain anything.

@Navigating the Wilderness Some doctor's do it as one procedure, mine did not. Apparently, if you do the procedure as an all-in-one revision, the risk for a leak doubles to 2%. As it is, my sleeve is a little bit larger than a "virgin" sleever -- because of the band, the surgeon doesn't feel comfortable making the sleeve as small.

@kristenmh Interesting to know. I went straight from band to sleeve and had never before heard of making it two surgeries.

Hi Glad I found this. I just scheduled my Band to Sleeve revision for May 5th. And I am nervous as the reality is sinking in.

My Doctor does them together, he never mentioned two surgery. But in our meeting today he said the new stomach is 1/4 of the old one For some reason I thought he had said it would be 1/3, This difference seems little but kind of through me. Perhaps because I had the Band before, really not sure. I have to go to see the PA a few weeks prior to surgery as we are over the 4 week cut off which is OK. The PA actually is more of a optimistic, actually the PA has been the one who first suggested the revision and how knowing my history and compliance he thought it would really help me. I really only saw the DR a few times in the last 8 years as i mainly saw the PA, The Dr you have to wait literally hours and hours!

Ok, I am pretty fresh out of surgery (March 17th) but I have PCOS and got my lapband removed, sleeve, and hiatal hernia repair on the same day. Easy recovery so far. I have a lot of the same concerns as you but I have lost 20lbs in 10 days. (SW 284) I know a lot is Water up front initially, but I also know some of that is fat! Lol. Im super happy about my number right now and even when it slows down I know its working! Get used to cutting carbs and upping Protein as much as possible, I wish I had done more pre-op. Best of luck to you!

Are you also on a Facebook group? I had been looking for someone who, like me, had a Band removal in 12/2016 and VSG I. 03/2017 from a Facebook group I am in. However, I gave up Facebook for Lent.... I am hoping you are that same person. Lol

Thank you to everyone who wrote a reply. My doctor said here's a risk associated with doing them simultaneously and he would prefer my stomach healed before doing the sleeve. I'm all scheduled and now it's just the waiting game. 2 weeks before I have to do a liquid diet and then he said by the wedding I should be down 50 lbs! Fingers crossed because I want to feel good on my special day!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
