Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

I went to my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon today I had my mind set on Gastric Sleeve. The surgeon says well with you being diabetic and African American I would recommend the bypass studies have shown that bypass works better for AA females. She stated that I would no longer have to take my diabetes medication. She said it's my choice but she wanted me to know the best option for me. Has anyone with diabetes been successful with the sleeve?

Never heard of race being a factor with weight loss surgery tools. Sounds like a bologna to me. The tool is what you make it, sleeve or bypass.

I chose the sleeve for various reasons. Nothing was recommended other than what I wanted "is a good choice" for me.

Its ultimately up to you to decide!

That's the first I've heard of that everything I've read doesn't mention anything like that. The complications of bypass compared to the sleeve is my biggest issue.

Thank you, I'm going to talk to another surgeon because that threw me off. I asked about losing too much weight with the bypass she said well you can always gain a little back if you lose too much.

That's what I'm going to do because I want to make the best decision. I have osteoarthritis and I take NSAID and with the bypass you can never take that again.

The surgeon kept saying with bypass you won't have to take your medication but with the sleeve it will take some time before I can stop. I think I'm going to go with my first mind to do the sleeve.

Yes, the complications of the bypass was too much. She gave me paperwork for both procedures and after reading the bypass I know in my heart I don't want that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
