surgery in 3 days. major jitters.

Recommended Posts

Hi. First time to this support group. Surgery on Wednesday. Logically, I understand everything that is happening and about to happen. Emotionally, I'm kind of freaking out. A few of my friends who have had the surgery are telling me about the massive dehydration they experienced post-op. My concerns are: pain, hydration, weakness. If there is a part of this board that has a support area for people who are immediately pre-op, would love some direction so I can find it.

Thanks!

Hi there. Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I'm scheduled to have a revision 4/11 and share some of the same concerns. It's totally normal to be emotional and sorta freaking out. Dehydration is a concern but I'm sure your surgeon has and will provide post op instructions on ways to avoid it. Some of us will breeze right through while others will struggle and experience dehydration. Pain varies also person to person. What I will say to you is no matter the struggles or hurdles we have to over come in the beginning they all pass. Hang in there and try to find comfort in the wonderful way your life is about to change in the long run. Always know in the back of your mind if it gets bad it will eventually get better. Hang in there and wishing you the very best on your WLS journey.

Hi there. I am having gastric bypass Monday 4/3. I am nervous too, but not about the normal things like pain and whatnot.

I know many people who have had the same surgery and have done amazing. I don't know anyone who has been unhappy with the surgery. That being said, I have read crazy stuff online about people who have bypass surgery and 3 months later, the claim the only lost 20 pounds. That really scares me.

Wow. I must be a freak. LOL. I don't know, I'm not worried about not losing weight, etc. I'm worried about the immediate complications and side effects related to the surgery. Yes, for sure, I have been reading post-op complications board and they are distressing, but I'm not as concerned with that. Good luck to all of you! I'm sure I will be in and out as I go through this. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
