Can I swallow pills yet?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this is a question best suited to the surgeon, but since it's Sunday, I can't call the office until tomorrow, so I'm asking here first :) I'm having an asthma exacerbation right now and I went to the urgent care, where they prescribed prednisone for 8 days. While these pills can be crushed, they have an absolutely vile taste, and it's much less disgusting to swallow them whole. I'm about six and a half weeks out from my sleeve. Do you think it's okay to just swallow them at this point?

Many people here have stated that they have taken tablets soon after surgery. I started one week post op with my tablets. Can you split them if they are the larger kind of tablet and did you ask when you were prescribed them?

The doctor at the urgent care informed me that I can crush them and mix them into pudding/applesauce if I need to, so I suppose they can be split, although they aren't very big. She couldn't offer any insight as to whether swallowing them would be appropriate, unfortunately :( I decided I would crush them today (still very yucky, even in pudding LOL) and call the surgeon tomorrow to see what they say. Thanks!

Ask your doctor. I can swallow anything around the size of a baby aspirin, but today at my 5 week appt he said to wait for 3 months before I switched to regular tablet Vitamins (I was bitching about how awful the chewables are!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
