Weightloss before surgery

Recommended Posts

After some advise and help please. I am getting the VSG in Decmeber and I'm trying to get myself in the best physical shape I can so the surgery will hopefully go smoothly. I am a self pay patient in Australia so i don't have any weightloss requirements before the surgery goes ahead, but I just want to make my body as ready for this as it can be. I'm 5'8 and 375lbs and trying to hopefully get down to 350lbs for surgery. I've been tracking my food and activity with my Fitbit and I'm averaging 1000+ cal deficits everyday for a month. The thing is I'VE GAINED WEIGHT!! [emoji24][emoji34] This ALWAYS happens when I try to lose weight and it's so discouraging. I feel like an utter failure and now I'm wondering if I should even have the surgery. How will I manage to lose weight after surgery and keep it off if I can't do this now? Did anyone else have this trouble before surgery? I dont know anyone else who has had any weightloss surgery so I can't ask anyone else these questions. Thank you for your time.

Congratulations on your commitment to change! Straight away it appears you may not be eating enough calories which can actually have the opposite effect, Google ketosis. Check for hidden sugars, fat and salts in your diet. Make sure you're getting enough Water and don't give up! You can do it!!

Hon, I lowered my caloric intake to lose and ended up gaining. Found out that I was "starving" my body and whatever fats, etc I got, my body retained. My doc was getting on to me for this as well. Says I have to eat more to start losing. Well, I did for a while. Was working, but went back to old habits (little food/terrible quality) and now I'm back to where I am getting the VSG surgery. So check out the calculators on this website and put your numbers in and follow the caloric intake. Do a week or two and see if indeed thats what you needed. I hope it helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
