nutritional values

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I was just wondering if any of you have come across any websites where you type in ingredients you have made at home & it calculates the nutritional values for you. Such as, the other day I made a pot of chili & could not for the life of me figure out how many calories, Protein, carbs etc..were in a cup of it. I also make a lot of cassaroles and would like to know what portion is approptiate for me (some of them go down too easily:)). Most of the sites I have come across just have pre-packaged amounts etc., and apparetly I cook w/weird food combo's. Any insite would be very helpful! Thanks!

No sites are going to be comrehensive to where you could select exactly what you had and avid issues of serving size, or even individual product differences (e.g. this store's "ground chuck" has 5g of fat, but this store's "ground chuck" has 7g). But there are a few sites that get you close, and let you add your own serving sizes... or select several of a smaller size to roughly estimate a larger one. The only one I can ever remember is FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal but I know there are at least two or three other biggies out there.

I use SparkPeople. It has a pretty good directory. You can look online for a book. I got a pocket guide from my pharmacy that has quite a few food values and even fast food/restaurant chain values.

I use myplate ... Since every brand has different info, I look up on what I ate or estimate based off of what each individual ingredient has per serving, etc.. then find something similar in the directory.

YES! I have a great site that I use. You entire your entire recipe, calculate the number of actual portions, and it creates a food label for that recipe. It's quite involved and detailed and tells you more than you knew you wanted to know about your recipe. It will also offer alternatives to make it more "diet" friendly, "low fat" friendly, etc.

It is:

NutritionData.com NutritionData's Nutrition Facts Calorie Counter

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
