Waist Size Expectations? Close to surgery

Recommended Posts

Finally got word from the doctor that I am about 5 weeks out. I am so tired of losing and gaining the same 30 pounds for years.

Question, I am about 271 pounds, 5-10 and a 42+ inch waist. What kind of waist size can i realistically expect? I avoid wearing pants at all right now because they are so uncomfortable.

It depends on how much weight you want to lose. Right now, at 6'0", 215 pounds, I am pretty reliably in size 34 pants and shorts across the board. My goal is to get to 180 pounds. When I get there, I would say I would be in a size 32. It also depends on how you carry your weight, and how you wear your pants.

I was sleeved in early September. I'm 6'1" and was 304. I had a 46" waist. I'm now 228 and wearing a 38" waist with some room to spare but not ready for a 36" yet. My goal is 220. I suspect I will be able to wear a 36" waist at that point. I think it depends on your shape and where you are carrying your weight. Although I wasn't "bottom heavy" I carried a lot of weight in my stomach and rear end!

Hang in there. The pre op stuff and the time it took--6 months for me--was the hardest part. It's been a breeze since the surgery and it's been well worth the wait!

I am 6'2, weighed 340 and wore a 44-46. I am now 185 and wear a 32-33 comfortably. I think a lot has to do with body shape, amount of extra skin, how comfortable you are showing your body, etc. I could probably wear a smaller size but still feel more comfortable with slightly lose fitting clothes.

At my peak of 361 I could actually wear loose fitting 48 jeans. That was with a 60 inch waist (my fat went mostly all to the gut). Waist is down to like 48 now so those pants are actually likely too big now. I won't be buying anything new until my post-op plateau which will likely be late this year or beyond.

I wouldn't have any expectations beyond maybe what you were wearing before your weight gain, assuming it was some time in the recent past. In my case I expect to get back to my weight only 5 years ago of 180.. but because of my dietary changes and the fact that I will keep it this way for the foreseeable future I might go below 180 as well, which I'm ok with. Whatever pants size it is, it is. It's the lifestyle I think people should be more tuned into than the size of clothes. Still, have my old jeans and armani dress pants which were 32x30s, rarely ever wore them anyways being more of a casual dresser. Will see if they get the heave-ho or not.

At 6'0 and about 225 and I'm wearing a loose 36 but most 34 fit. I started at a size 60. Most of my weight is in my stomach. My stomach almost hangs over my pants. If I wear a pair of pants higher, I can only go above my belly button, anything else just slides off. My father is about 5'10 and 176 pounds and wears a size 36. I can't believe I can wear his pants now even if they are a little short. I think he also wears them pretty loose and can go down a size or two.

Including the pre-op diet I’ve dropped about 4 inches off my waist since surgery. At my absolute heaviest I wore size 52 pants and now I’m a 44. How much you lose off your waist size will depend where you’re wearing your pants now. I always wore mine around my belly, but if you wear yours below, you won’t see much of a drop.

I started with a 44, and am now down to a 34 jeans or shorts and a 36 slack. I'm hoping to lose another 20 lbs or so to get to 190 and then we'll see. It's been a great year. I've kept a pair of my big guy pants, and holy cow, they were big.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
