Side Effects and Complications

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of scheduling myself for Mini Gastric Bypass for May 15th. I have read as much as I could find on the procedure and all the various side effects, but I'm very interested in hearing that information from people who have actually had the surgery, not a research article or summary of the procedure. Do people have trouble with acid reflux, how have you treated it and was it effective? Any ulcers or any other side effects?

I'm not morbidly obese, but have been quite heavy my entire life. I'm 50 years old, and have finally decided to do something for myself. However, I'm having second thoughts and would appreciate input from anyone about any unpleasant side effects.

I had MGB on 12/12/16. I have had no complications. I have had no acid reflux issues. I do take a Protonix every day but that's simply because I have LPRD (laryngopharyngeal reflux disease or silent reflux) and I haven't gotten a checkup with my ENT doctor. My surgeon also gave me some omeprazole to take after surgery when I was discharged. I started taking the Protonix after I ran out of the omeprazole.

I have lost 51 lbs so far and am almost in onederland. My heaviest weight was 298 lbs. My pre-op diet weight was 259.2 lbs. My surgery weight was 247 lbs. My current weight is 201 lbs. My goal weight is 145 lbs. I am 5'7" tall.

I get nauseous at times but it doesn't last long. I'm not sure why it happens but it doesn't happen often. I have dumped once right after surgery on my way home. I bought the wrong Gatorade drink and took a few sips. Almost immediately I started to feel light headed and dizzy and just generally bad. I figured it out pretty quickly. I tried to pour Water into the Gatorade but that didn't work so I just threw it away and got something else.

The thing that has worked for me is having an eating schedule and keeping in touch with my surgeon and my NUT. They have helped me tremendously to make sure I am making progress.

I hope my experience helps you make a decision. Having this surgery is one of the best decisions I have ever made. [emoji2][emoji41][emoji3]

I had it done 5 months ago and have had no complications at all . I don't get reflux , diarreah or dumping (apart from 2 weeks after surgery when i tried a piece of chicken while i was still on pureed food 😱). I was 310 lbs at my heaviest. 301 when i started my pre op 2 week diet. 288 on surgery day. Now 223 lb. There are is no food I can't tolerate. I was 55 on the day of surgery, feeling 70. I now feel like my age again now! I was diabetic with high BP. Now diabetes blood tests and BP are in normal range. I was a size UK 26 (US 22) and am already , just 5 months later, in a UK 18 (US 14). BMI at present is 36 and it was 50. I wish I'd done this sooner when i was less obese . When i first considered it, age 50, I was 270 lbs ...... then in 5 years on went another 32lb! Go for it, you won't regret it 😁 PS Hair loss was minimal and not noticeable , saggy skin i much prefer rather than my fat skin!

I've made the down payment to secure my OR date. Thank you both for your input/support. I am nervous about the surgery itself, but I think we are all that way before any procedure.

I would like to hear from any others regarding their personal experiences with this procedure. I am having my surgery in Toronto on May 15th. Post-operatively, did anyone have any difficulties with driving or any other day to day activities?

I am scheduled to see Dr. Illan or a gastric sleeve surgery but am now wondering if the mini gastric bypass is a better option for me. Although the rerouting of the intenstines scares me a little. I have a BMI of 51 and i dont know if the sleeve will be sufficient to take me to my goal and i dont really want to have a revision later.

He will take into account your questionnaire and your questions and concerns and let you know which surgery he thinks will be best for you. The thought of rerouting the intestines can be scary but I never think about it. I don't feel any different, except I can feel my pouch when I'm bloated or full. Not knowing your medical history, I would suggest asking him about the mini gastric bypass, and weigh your options. Please let me know if you have any other questions ok?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
