Pre op Liquid diet

Recommended Posts

That's a fairly common practice; we just don't hear much about it on these forums because there isn't as much to complain about as there is with the longer pre-op diets, particularly the all-liquid ones which generate a lot of online traffic!

You are lucky. I mean I am offered the ability to have non-starchy vegetables up until 72 hours before and that is it. I am able to have salads but it has limited ingredients. Mainly the only liquid diets are the hardest to pull off. I will see if I will be able to handle this without the vegetables and only the liquid.

My surgeon had me on a 2 week pre-op diet where I was able to continue eating food.

I remember I could have very low carbs.... I would usually do a Protein Shake for Breakfast and then I was allowed lean meat (I always did chicken) for lunch and dinner along with a small salad or non-starchy veggies. If I remember, the meat portion at lunch and dinner was about 3 oz.

Then the day before surgery, I was on all Clear Liquids (no Protein shakes).

Everybody's plan is a little different, some require a 2-week all liquid pre op diet... others don't.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery.... wish you the best!

I was clear liquid only for 2 days pre-op. Wasn't bad at all. Isopure makes several clear drinks. The Protein helped ward off hunger during those two days

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
