No dumping---but a "stuck" feeling?

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone! Question - I hear about everyone "dumping" after rny but I haven't experienced it yet and I am 9 weeks out, but I haven't had anything with sugar. What have experienced twice, though, is a discomfort or "stuck" feeling right in the center of my chest at my sternum. This has only happened recently, when I tried a small amount of finely cut steak and tonight when I had some scrambled eggs. Anyone else have this happen, and is this normal?

I've also lost 30lbs since surgery on 1/18/17. Does that sound about right for weight loss? Just curious. thanks!

Eat something with sugar over 25 grams and you'll experience dumping. The stuck feeling is the over stuffed feeling you get from eating Protein such as steak and eggs. I couldn't stomach them at 9 weeks out. And now 19 months post up can eat very little protein...but I have lotsa of energy feel great and have lost over 130 pounds. I used Protein Shakes at 9 weeks out to meet my protein requirements.

You are not experiencing dumping. You are just getting used to eating dense Proteins. At first chicken made me feel that way. After only a couple of bites I had the "full" feeling. Remember to take small bites and chew very well before swallowing. Making sure the Protein is moist helps also - I eat chicken with salsa, guacamole, and hummus.

At 5 months post op I only eat real food because I can't tolerate Protein Shakes any longer. They are just way too sweet. I have no problems with chicken, steak, pork, shrimp and crab, etc.

Thanks everyone! Now that I think about it, the eggs and steak were pretty dry. Will make sure to moisten my food and eat slower. I've been pretty good so far and haven't eaten anything with high sugar. Protein Shakes so far have definitely been a life saver for me!!

6 months out eggs still get "stuck" I can manage a half an egg. Salmon and occasionally chicken too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
