Need help eating more

Recommended Posts

Since I could eat regular foods (almost 2 months ago) I have gotten into the bad habit of only eating 1 meal a day on average. I don't eat Breakfast because I drive an hour to work and eating in the car makes me nauseous, plus I don't wake up early enough to have a sit-down meal. I very rarely eat lunch at work due to being very busy, only eating when my co-worker forces me to go to lunch with the guys. So at night I'll have 1 meal and sometimes a snack before bed.

When I got my Vitamin panel back I was 0.1 below the normal Protein range. Everything else but Vitamin D was good.

I know I need to get out of this habit, especially when hunger comes back into play, but I am not sure how to start again. I am slightly worried that just jumping right in to eating more will make me nauseous.

Can you drink a Protein Shake on your drive in? I have an hour drive as well but don't have any issues with eating/driving. Even if your Vitamin panel is coming back okay how are you getting enough Protein in? I would think you'd be struggling not to lose muscle mass if you're only eating once or twice a day.

My doc's biggest concern about people getting back to work was falling into old habits and either not eating or eating junk foods because of being in a hurry. Is it really that hard to give yourself 5 extra minutes in the morning to sit down and have a little bit of cottage cheese or something to start the day?

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
