kinipela24 80 Posted March 20, 2017 I started this topic in another section didn't really know where to post it. Anyways, I suffer from bipolar 2 disorder and was wondering if anyone else has pre and post op. I am on medication and have a therapist and a psychiatrist. I was wondering what people's experiences has been. I am having the surgery on June 14th and feeling anxiety 2 clk and BigUtahMan reacted to this
G33kg1rl 36 Posted March 20, 2017 I don't have bipolar disorder, but I do have major depression. I also have meds, a psychologist and a psychiatrist. I feel some anxiety too . . . I've been stable for several months, and I really prefer life this way! I worry that post-op the absorption of my meds will change somehow, or that the hormonal changes will send me into a relapse of depression. I'm working on how to prevent these things with my therapist. Hopefully, it'll all end up going smoothly! 1 BigUtahMan reacted to this
kinipela24 80 Posted March 20, 2017 Thanks so much for replying. I hope I didn't scare people off by using the "B" word. Just like many judge people for being overweight or obese, they also judge you if you have a mental illness maybe even on here too (I hope not). Especially for the one i mentioned not. Too much of a stigma on depression anymore. people would never know because mine is VERY depression dominant and the other part presents itself as anxiety now. Either way it is no fun having these extra challenges in life. My psychiatrist assured me there would be no malabsorption problems with my meds. What did yours say and when is your surgery date? Sorry for the novel guys and gals. I have been scolded ince for not writing in a blog. Thanks to everyone who has been so kind and supportive. Im here for you too 5 BigUtahMan, clk, Deleted Account and 2 others reacted to this
Candigal 35 Posted March 20, 2017 I don't have bipolar 2 or any mental health issues (diagnosed, but some days I wonder), I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry about the stigma and I hope all goes well for you!
mylighthouse 782 Posted March 20, 2017 Hello I have bipolar disorder and take several meds for it... meds for the anxiety, depression, manic side and a mood stabilizer too. I am over 4 months post-op. I have only had a few changes made to my medication since I have lost quite a bit of weight. My psychiatrist went down on the dosages of all of my meds with the exception of my anti-depressant. I have felt great mentally for years (been on meds for over 10), and with the newest changes in the dosages of my meds I have not experienced any problems at all. 1 clk reacted to this

Sorry for the novel guys and gals. I have been scolded ince for not writing in a blog. Thanks to everyone who has been so kind and supportive. Im here for you too I can't answer your question, but wanted to address your comment regarding the stigma of Bipolar disorder. I have been with my husband for 24 years, 10 years ago he was diagnosed as bipolar. I was terrified because of everything I had seen on TV and movies regarding it. We were together 14 years prior to diagnosis and the doctor tells us and all of a sudden I'm scared? I hate how they only portray SEVERE disturbing cases and not the everyday Joe. Truth is that on meds, his behavior is more even keeled and he enjoys his life more. When he is happier, everyone is happier. Thank you for telling your story. We don't keep his illness a secret because we want to be part of destroying the stigma. I hope everything goes well for you and you have a support here, whenever you need it. 6 jadelynn812, Stella S, BigUtahMan and 3 others reacted to this

I'll need to stop taking extended-release Welbutrin because you can't crush it. The regular kind you have to take twice a day is crushable, though, and so are the rest of my meds. So that's good. I don't have a surgery date yet . . . I'm still satisfying all the requirements to be cleared for surgery.
geets 44 Posted June 13, 2017 I'm bipolar and I have a question for bipolar users... did your moods change post op ? My surgeon told me I would probably come off Rivotril post surgery. I think it's fantastic but can it be true ?

crocodoxie 223 Posted June 14, 2017 Sending a hug. Both of my adult sons have bipolar. It can be tricky, but with the right combination of meds, hopefully you find your solution with surgery. 1 Deleted Account reacted to this

I think it's fantastic but can it be true ? I work in psych - have your psych MD prescribe your psych mess and your WLS stick to surgery I have only seen positive changes with WLS patients and mood disorders. Extended releases are usually out. Also anxiety is normal before surgery I personally was scared it would not go well - it would not work - it would work!!! Best to you on this healthy journey - my bet is positive changes in body and mind. 1 jadelynn812 reacted to this
clk 3,519 Posted July 4, 2017 I know this is an old thread, but I just saw it.I have bipolar 2, PTSD and anxiety. I was actually diagnosed post sleeve, after I had my daughter. I thought I had postpartum depression. I did, I mean, I knew I was deeply unhappy despite weight loss. After a year of therapy and meds and after reviewing my history they diagnosed me. They were very cautious. I've been treated by the same doc for three years now.I'm 1000× better than I was before, but I never knew what was wrong or took meds before. My whole life they never knew, but I've had cycles for 15 years and have been an overachiever insomniac during them since I was a teen.My meds took a long time to get right, but now it's just Topamax, Ambien and a bit of Zoloft from Oct-Feb for those Fall/Winter blues, but she wants me on another mood stabilizer, too. She tried Abilify but I itched like mad. Latuda's up next. We'll give that a go next week. I've tried everything else and had tremors or twitching or some other reaction. :/How do you all cope with the never-ending feeling of your diagnosis? That's the bit I hate the most.Sorry to ramble. I came here to start this thread and found one. I'm happy to see I'm not alone.Cheri 2 ProudGrammy and Stella S reacted to this
Stella S 612 Posted July 4, 2017 A diagnosis is a label. I hate labels - a statement that a person is not normal. One of my patients once told me - it is not that I am different it is that most of the world is only ordinary. I love that statement Congrats on stabilizing and being so much better 4 ProudGrammy, clk, Be_pretty_epic and 1 other reacted to this

Juni7578 4 Posted July 4, 2017 I have bipolar and had my surgery April 26th. I had a bout of depression right after but I really believe it was true sadness and anxiety rather than a mood swing. I haven't had any absorption issues. I switched to Wellbutrin HR which can be crushed (it tastes HORRIBLE, just a warning 😄). Overall I feel so much better. I am taking a lot less of my anxiety med and I am generally very stable. Of course period hormones are still an issue, but it isn't as bad. I also actually get those mythical endorphins from exercising that everyone used to talk about!! 2 Stella S and clk reacted to this
