Weight loss projections for clothes buying.

Recommended Posts

I'm four months post op and now and have lost 50 pounds and my projection is to lose 20 more as I started out at 220 before surgery. My question for those of you that have gone through this is with another 20 expected to lose, should I buy clothes a size smaller for summer. Reason I'm asking is that I'm obsessed now with shopping being that I'm so much smaller and just bought 8 pairs of awesome pants from Ann Taylor (and they are not cheap) but some are capris for warmer weather. I'm thinking I should take some back and get a size smaller. Thoughts?

I didn't save a couple of pairs of cool looking fancy jeans that were close to my goal size. Reason being I knew sizing had changed in the last 20 yrs and I also knew while I might intend to be a size 5 at 130lbs, my body might not quite agree with the proportions I was familiar with as a skinner person. I turned out to be a size 8 at 140lbs, so not bad. But pants still fit oddly. I still can't find a size that fits correctly.

I'm still pre-op, cruising the post-op forum for "research" and being nosey :) Just reading your post makes me all that more excited to have such a problem as this lol. Right now - my biggest problem is the drawers full of jeans I just can't wait to wear because they are all TOO SMALL! I am hoping I can shop in my own closet lol

That's what I did. As I've lost weight I have used my smaller clothes that I held on too. Also leggings with long tshirts and dresses have become my best friend.

Lucky you. I had a lot of clothes I bought hoping to diet enough to fit into them. They were all about a size or 2 too small. I sort of forgot about them (cos I simply never lost enough weight). That was 2015. Mid last year, I decided to have WLS and was told to lose weight before seeing my surgeon. Lost way more than I was required to lose but didn't care.
I re-discovered the tight clothes (a few weeks post op) and they fit perfectly. I was so happy.. Till about a month after (8 weeks post op). I have since given them away cos they got too loose. Very pricey clothes!! :53_cold_sweat:.. It was bittersweet. Now its just confusing. I want to buy clothes I need for now, but I have already 'undergrown' some clothes I bought after surgery..

Yes, it is very bittersweet that is for sure! It's so nice to have the 'clothes are too big' problem! I didn't save any of my smaller sizes. All my clothes were a 16 pre op size. So now I'm just starting to fit into 10s and 12s so I really do have to buy clothes because I work in a professional office and cannot wear leggins with big shirts. I guess it's a good problem to have!

I recommend only shopping at Goodwills and Thriftstores until after you hit bottom and rebound. once you are in maintence mode, then start looking for wardrobes.

I was having the same challenge, decided to shop at thrift stores as I do not plan on spending a lot of money for clothes that will only fir for a couple weeks. Once I get within 5-10 lbs of my target, then I will be more open to spending for long term.

I've been taking this approach for the past year. But at this point, I am finding hitting the sales at the mall at the right time gives me new clothes at just slightly more than the thrift store price. It is amazing the phenomenal deals you can find in size large shirts and 34 waist pants and shorts as opposed to the bigger sizes! (And I'll get the tax write-off when I donate them later on...)

I'll always love going to the thrift store, though. We have a huge one in one of our NOLA suburbs. It is like a fun treasure hunt every time we go there. You never know what you will find.

Thrift stores here are as dry as hell. Have had to hit stores for sales. Burlington and TJ maxx have been a blessing

I think 8 pairs of expensive pants is probably too much, but I am cheap. I think I have 3 pairs of jeans that fit me now and don't need any more than that, but I work from home and don't need professional clothes.

I also buy 90% of my clothing at thrift stores. I am just now fitting into really nice brands of jeans (paige, hudson, etc) Each pair has been about $5-20. I bought one pair at TJ MAxx for $70 and returned it after finding basically the same thing at a thriftstore for $6.

If I find something nice I'll buy it one to two sizes smaller than I am now, but I still have about 30-50 lbs to lose so a size smaller in summer is realistic for me. It sounds like you're closer to goal and so I'm guessing its less of a sure thing for you. For me, looking forward to wearing the smaller clothes one way I keep myself motivated to stick to the plan.

Which thrift store your talking about? They used to have one at the end of the Huey P. but it's gone now. I loved to shop there. We need to find a good one soon for me.

We love the Red, White and Blue Thrift Store. 5728 Jefferson Highway (where Elmwood meets Harahan). If you or someone you know is over 50, everything is 50% off on Wednesdays. Every time we go there, it is like a big treasure hunt!

Ok that's the one right around the corner from my aunt and uncles. But I've never been to it. Will definitely have to check it out.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
