New: ? Diet beforehand/exercise after?

Recommended Posts

Hi- I am brand new and considering WLS. I was scheduled for a seminar yesterday and didn't go because I am a little scared to start the process!

Do most insurance plans make you go on medically supervised diet beforehand? My BMI is 43, what if I diet and no longer meet requirements?? Then why not just first and exercise in the first place (which obviously doesn't work in the long run)

second question- I live in Arizona, I would like to start hiking again. I'm worried about whether after surgery, I'm thinking gastric bypass, I'd be able to enjoy hot outdoor activities and stay hydrated with a smaller stomach??

Re: your insurance - depends on the policy - however, most policies consider your weight at first visit before any medically supervised diet as the starting point for weight and BMI. Get yourself scheduled for the seminar and ask some questions - they have probably dealt with your carrier before.

As for hiking after surgery, I'm six months out and I'm getting ready to run a 5k in a month. I do all kinds of outside stuff. My pre-surgery BMI was 48.1. Currently, I'm at 34. I'm down 81 pounds. I need to have two knees replaced and with that I'm running 13:39 miles in my 5k training. You may want to make sure you carry a little more Water with you, especially in the first few months after surgery, but shouldn't be an issue.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
