Incision oozing?

Recommended Posts

Is it normal for my incision to be oozing? It's the port incision. Its kind of a yellow liquid, its not like pus, it's almost the color and consistency of melted butter. Its a very small amount. I have no other signs of infection....no fever, no chills, no redness around the area, the area is not warm to the touch and there is no odor. I will call my surgeon in the morning but I was just wondering if this is normal in the meantime. Thanks.

Mandi,

I had lap band surgery 2 1/2 wks ago. I had not had any problems until 2 days ago when I noticed the incision above my navel had a raised circular area around it. As I looked closer, I noticed slight drainage from one end of the incision. It was "watery" and clear, tinged with red and yellow. I freaked!! Called my doctor, saw me that afternoon. He prescribed antibiotics and said that this was not a major problem - to wash the area 3X daily with bacterial soap and Water and place a loose bandage over it. The next AM the area was red and draining more, but by that night was looking much better and no drainage. Am still taking my antibiotic and the area is almost completely healed. You'll feel much better after you see your surgeon. Hope all goes well.

Oozing can be normal as the port material reacts with fat and it sometimes melts (the fat melts). But it's usually a pale reddish color. The yellow is VERY concerning.

You need to not just call your doc in the AM, you need to be seen in the AM. If you cannot be seen tomorrow you seriously need to go to ER just to check it out. Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's an infection. It needs to be looked at.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
