Body image issues

Recommended Posts

I'm having body image issues. I've lost 35 pounds, down to 160 but I still feel like a whale.

I hear what your saying and can relate
I found it took my mind a lot longer to catch up people were saying oh my you've lost so much weight you look amazing I felt the same as I always did like a whale and then a couple of months ago I'm almost a year out I was like wow look how much smaller I am I looked at photos and couldn't believe my eyes and the size clothes I buy now blow my mind but sometimes my mind and body are not on the same page.

I completely agree! I have the same problem. I am still early in my journey but I am 6weeks post op and have lost 37 lbs since my pre-op diet. I have lots of people telling me oh my you look great how much have you lost now? But I don't feel like I've lost anything. My clothes do fit a little different so that does make me feel like I have lost but when I look in the mirror I still feel like I look like I did 6 weeks ago. But like Shell ???? Said, it's like my mind hasn't caught up to my body.

@ssbthodge, I'm in your boat. Even though I've lost almost 30 pounds since the surgery 5 weeks ago and about 45 pounds from my highest, I look in the mirror and see absolutely nothing different. Fat, fat, fat. Same with pictures! But the people close to me swear up and down that the change is real. Sigh.

I know what you mean! It is nice to say I have lost 37 lbs but I just don't see it as much h as everyone else does. One of these days though we will get to say look how much I've changed! Good luck on the rest of your journey!!

It's funny, around 30 lbs. Seems to be when people notice. I look at myself naked in the mirror every morning. I usually try to find something I like no matter how hard it is. I am 35 lbs. down and I look less bloated overall, and my face is much less puffy.

The best advice on this site is to take measurements and pictures. It can help you see how far you've come and get you through the stalls.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
