How is diluted fruit juice acceptable in a post-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 days post-op. In the hospital I was served diluted fruit juice, which I was too afraid to try. I simply don't understand how diluted fruit juice would not cause dumping. Apple juice has 24g of sugar per cup. Even if I dilute it with 50/50 with Water, that's still 12g which seems like WAY too much. This morning I attempted just 4g of sugar in my Protein Shake and had what seemed like early dumping symptoms.

I am similarly concerned about milk, which I am allowed to have beginning tomorrow. Skim milk has 11g of sugar per cup. Again, won't this cause dumping?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

The sugar in fruit and milk is natural and doesn't cause dumping. You may drink unsweetened apple juice diluted 50/50 and shouldn't have any issues. Unless you are lactose intolerant, milk should be fine. I don't have any issues with either. For food/drink other than fruit and milk, the guidance from my Nutritionist was that a serving shouldn't have more than 6g sugar and sugar shouldn't be listed within the first 5 ingredients. 4g of sugar shouldn't cause dumping.

I have never had a problem with dumping from fruit juice. I drink it fairly regularly. I have an issue with plain Water making my stomach cramp. Crystal light, mio or even fresh fruit added to water does bother me. Its weird but my surgeon says it not an uncommon occurance.

The milk and juice help get the fluids down and provide a few calories when most people are having a hard time getting much down.

Milk is encouraged on our plan because it gets you your liquids and your Protein. fruit juice we are limited to half a cup a day, I assume having fruit juice is better than nothing hydration-wise if you are one of the many, many people who has a tough time drinking Water post op. I don't drink it now, but my first day on liquids I had one of those little foil-topped half-cups of apple juice and it was HEAVENLY. My opinion is in moderation it won't hurt but I'm not going to make a habit of drinking it, especially since I'm now doing much better drinking water and I'm hesitant to put anything into my body that doesn't have protein since I'm getting so little into me still.

My first 3 days post op I drank diluted fruit juice. It took me all day to drink 20-oz. I don't think juice is a good thing long term, but the first few days post op it's the only thing I tolerated well.

If I have anything with sugar, even sugar alcohol, in the mornings I have issues. This morning I had oatmeal made with 1/2 cup of milk, and I had mild dumping. Later on in the day it is okay. I haven't even attempted juice yet. I have no issues drinking Water, so there's really no need to do that anyway.

My doctor said Clear Liquids the first day. The hospital brought me a Protein Shake. I stuffed it in my bag for when I was on the full liquid phase. Follow your doctors orders not the hospital. I still don't drink fruit juice as it is pretty concentrated carbs and sugar even if they are natural. I try to stay below 25 carbs and 25g of sugar. All my sugar is from natural sources.

Take care

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
