Headaches during pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

For those of you who have done or are currently doing your liquid pre-op diet, did you experience headaches and if so, did you take anything for it (Tylenol)?

I'm on day 2 and have a pretty bad headache. I'm certain it's from my body adjusting to the liquid only madness I'm putting it through. Hopefully the headaches will subside as it gets used to the liquid. It's going to be a long 2 weeks!

Are you drinking enough clear fluids like Water?
Also, before your pre-op liquid diet began were you drinking things like soda, coffee, etc.?
This happened to me when I stopped drinking soda entirely.

I've never been a soda or tea drinker. I may not be getting in enough Water. My tummy is full from the shakes. Great suggestion. Gracias!

My dietitian recommended 3.7L of clear fluids (including water) a day, I'd suggest at least 1.5-2L a day.

The preop has me super thirsty. I guess I should count how much I drink, but it is at least 2 quarts on top of shakes. I have felt sick a few times, and it was always because I needed more Water.< br>

It's fairly common. I had them but I think mine were more related to caffeine withdrawal. You can also get them from the sudden cutting out of sugars/carbs in your diet. I took some Tylenol on the bad days. For me the headaches passed fairly fast. It was the first few days that were most challenging.

I had a nurse tell me to expect headaches during a liquid diet because fat stores a lot of toxins. As your body starts burning fat the toxins are released in your system. Drinking Water as others stated was her recommendation. My headaches did come and lasted a couple of days. If they don't clear up then I would check with the NUT and then your doctor.

I'm on day 5 and my headaches are gone! They ended around day 3. I've made it a point to stay super hydrated and haven't had any problems since.

Can't honestly say the liquid diet isn't as bad I expected it to be

Your detoxing from a sugar, whatever's in processed foods and maybe caffeine. Every time I did a cleanse I got that for 3-4 days . It might last a week, but it'll go.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
