Anyone plan on sleeve and get bypass instead?

Recommended Posts

I have been dead set on getting the sleeve. I'm set to have surgery next month and I decided last week to go with roux en y. I have GERD and it seems this is the better option. I was pretty upset at first but I'm feeling better about it everyday.

Did anyone else set their heart on sleeve and then switch to bypass? Are you happy you did so or wish you stuck with Sleeve?

I had my heart set on the sleeve too, but because I have Gerd as well, I now have to get bypass. I had my EGD done and found out that I have Barrett's esophagus which was caused by GERD so the sleeve would make it worse. It was hard for me to process that at first, but now I'm fine with getting bypass. I know someone who has GERD and got the sleeve and had a really hard time afterwards so I did not want to go through the same thing. Just do your research on gastric bypass and ask a lot of questions so you are 100% comfortable with your decision. My decision was based on what was the healthiest for me in the long run. Good luck to you

Intially was thinking sleeve as well, switched on surgeons advice to bypass. Really happy I did. Mine was a revision from a lap band, I would have been devastated risking yet another revision.

I was is the same boat. I've never really had reflux but my EGD revealed Barrett's as well. I was dead set on having the sleeve but after talking with my surgeon and doing more research I've decided to go with a bypass.

Sorry to hear about your Barretts, but it's good to find out about it sooner than later. Are you located in Seattle?

I know, Barrett's caught me by surprise. Happy I know now. I'm in Seattle. Started my pre-op weigh ins last fall and am eligible for surgery next month. Have my final review meeting with my surgeon on Friday.

I initially wanted sleeve cause worried about the malabsorption aspect of the surgery. My surgeon said I was too big for sleeve. I'm glad I followed his advise I've lost 130 pounds and am a healthy bmi ...I want to lose 10 more. I have colleagues that have had bariatric surgery all the ones who had RNY gastric bypass lost and maintained their weight loss the sleeves didn't lose all the weight and gained some back. Not sure why...if my bmi had been lower I certainly would have done the sleeve but I'm very happy with gastric bypass results and honestly 19 months later the only thing I have to maintain is the Vitamins. I don't dump and only vomit if I eat too fast or too much at one time. I have to be careful with solid Proteins.

The only reason I even looked into WLS surgery was because of the sleeve because I was dead set against RNY. But after consulting with my surgeon he recommended RNY. During the 6 month insurance requirement I researched and read tons of posts from people who had both procedures and decided I'd rather go for the one that would result in more weight loss and not require me to have a revision later if I developed issues with GERD. At 5 months I am very happy with my decision. I have yet to dump or vomit and can eat most Proteins as long as they are not too dry.

I never really considered sleeve because I wanted to lose the most weight possible. I asked my surgeon (one of the top in my area) why people choose sleeve and he said "because it's trendy. Soon it will go the way of the once-trendy lap band." That really made me 100% set on RNY.

This is exactly what has happened to me. I'm glad to hear you haven't had any dumping. This is a fear of mine. How much weight have you lost in 5 months?

I have lost approximately 86 pounds since surgery. I didn't have to do the pre-op liquid diet. I haven't dumped because for the most part, I have not eaten anything deep fried or that is made of 50% or more sugar. I'm very careful because a friend who had RNY years ago ate something at a party we were hosting and spent 5 hours in our guest bathroom.

I also did the RNY due to Barrett's esophagus and GERD. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and have lost about 20 lbs since the surgery. I have not vomited or dumped yet either. I have a couple of friends that had a sleeve to RNY conversion - so I just figured that the RNY was the way to go. My mother in law had the RNY 12 years ago and has maintained her weight well.

I had my scope yesterday and have a 4cm hiatal hernia, severe GERD. I didn't take my meds yesterday before the procedure. During the procedure I refluxed acid in to my lungs. It was misery. I now know for sure, I'm getting gastric bypass and not sleeve.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
