Hiatal hernia 4 years post op -help

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I need some help. Had the gastric sleeve 4 years ago last week and am regaining some of my weight back. I originally lost right at 100 pounds.. kept it that way for a few years and the last year and a half I have gained back about 35. In august I had a hysterectomy due to tumors but kept my ovaries. I went to the dr worried about the gain and she wanted to do an upper GI. Had that done this morning and Radiologist stated that I had a hiatal hernia and that is what is causing the weigh gain and the gerd. My dr has said we would look into a revision depending on what they found today. Has anyone else experienced this and if so and you went with the bypass how much weight did you lose? I don't over eat, I work out and am pretty good at sticking to what I know I can and can't eat.

I do not believe that the hiatal hernia is the cause of weight gain.....i have GERD. And a hiatal hernia. This has not caused ne to gain weight and if anything it makes me NOT WANT to eat. The weight gain is more than likely due to overeating and stretching your pouch. And maybe the hormonal change from the hysterectomy could affect your weight

Basically...weight gain is caused from eating too much of the wron g foods. Too many calories and carbs. Try a low carb diet. It works.

Maybe I should have gotten a little more detailed.. I have to force myself to eat.. there are many days the Hubs asks have you ate yet well into the evening and my response is.. uhmmmm.. no?! That's when I realize I haven't. So over eating is not an issue here. As I said before I am good about not eating what I'm not supposed to be and the weight gain is still there.
I am well aware that the general cause of weight gain is caused by eating the wrong foods.. calories and carbs.

This post wasn't about how did I go wrong or what am I potentially doing wrong, it's to ask others who have had the revision and repair how THEY came out of it.

I don't think you need a revision, you need the hernia repaired. I would get a 2nd opinion.

Sleevers don't have pouches, and a properly formed sleeve does not stretch.

You said nothing about how and what you eat. A Bypass won't help you lose weight if you eat around it.

My primary Dr will send it to the Bariatric Surgeon for consult. My insurance requires more than one Drs Opinion for bariatric issues.

Have you yourself had this issue that I'm speaking of?

Also should I give my daily menu so that it's clearer for those of the group that are just going to try and imply I'm eating incorrectly. Again I'm quite clear in my above post.. this isn't about the WEIGHT GAIN. This is about developing a hernia after being sleeved and what others have done.
This is my first post on here since 2012 and I can see why I left the group before.

The reason we are asking is a hital hernia has nothing to do with needing a revision. Why can't they just repair the hernia?

It just sounds like they are trying to get more money. The hernia is giving you GERD and making it hard to eat. Fixing it alone will solve your problems.

You haven't posted anything about why you need a revision. It doesn't make logical sense.

Also being 4 years post-op with your particular issue, you are going to be hard pressed to get a response from a Vet. Most of them don't post here anymore.

I've noticed online that a lot of people the have had the sleeve and have GERD get revisions to bypass. Maybe its more for mechanical reasons, not to lose weight I think you need to get the second opinion and go from there.

Have you asked your Dr about the stretta procedure? I'm told it was originated for sleevers with chronic GERD. I'm actually going back to my doctor for and endoscopy to see if i'm a candidate. My Dr suspects I have a hiatal hernia. This GERD is kicking my ass. I'm 3 years out.

I'm not sure if you're still looking for info as I see you posted about this in March. I can relate to your situation. I had the sleeve almost two years ago. I have PCOS, which didn't present symptoms until after a pregnancy. I was very fit prior to the pregnancy. After pregnancy, I just couldn't lose the weight regardless of my clean meal plan and 5 day per week exercise routine. I actually just started gaining without changing anything! Doctors did blood work and other tests, said it was PCOS and my best hope for losing was wls. I had a consult, was recommended to go with the sleeve. July 15, 2015 I was sleeved. I quickly lost down to 195 but it stalled by month 4!! I was working out, eating correctly, nada! It was very depressing. In June of 2016 I started slowly gaining, again without having changed anything. By January 2017, I was up to 216. I went back to my surgeon who sent me for tests and to the medical weight loss doctor. Tests revealed that I had become Insulin Resistant AND I had developed a Hiatal Hernia. I followed a Keto diet from January-April. I lost 16 pounds the first two weeks putting me back to 200 BUT my weight would not budge. I also had severe reflux during this entire time. So, my surgeon suggested that we fix the hernia and revise to a bypass because that is the only way to resolve the gerd. He also stated that with the malabsorption and my endocrine issues, he hopes I will lose another 40-50 pounds. He had to do a peer to peer with my insurance but got it approved!! I had my revision surgery June 14th and am doing very well...it was easier and less painful than the sleeve!! I'm almost 2 weeks out and down 12 pounds. The weight loss may be slower this time but the scale is moving! I'm praying it continues to move because I can't imagine going through this entire process and not getting to a healthy weight. I wish I had gone with the bypass originally but there's no way we could have known I would be one of the few that the sleeve wouldn't be successful for.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
