Why has my sister put on weight post surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

My big sister had lapband surgery about five days ago. I'm doing my best to support her in this as I think I was a major instigator of her having the procedure in the first place, so I particularly want her to be successful. I'm at a loss to understand why she has put on weight.... I just didn't know what to say when she told me. She is 2kgs heavier than her pre-op weight. She has only been drinking fluids, ie Water, skim milk, Sustagen, Tomato Soup in 50 ml quantities so it defies all the logic that has been shoved down our neck about what makes us fat! She's very despondant, and I want to offer her encouragement but I don't want to be telling her something that isn't correct. I hope someone here can offer me some insight.

Thanks

Mary-Jane

Hi Mary Jane - I am 4 days post op and when I got home from the hospital I discovered I had gained 4 pounds. I was like you - how can this be. One of the reponses I got from my post was that weight gain right after surgery is not unusual. It is most likely due to the IV fluids.

she had surgery 5 days ago? at that time she had I.V. fluids that puts on weight. I gained 5 pounds when I had surgery and had to forgot to tell my husband to wait a week before stepping on the scale after his surgery. all the gasses they pump you up with and the fluids add pounds. get her up walking this helps and by the middle of the week she should see a drop in weight. good luck and thanks for being her support we all need it.

I too gained weight (6 lbs.) and called my doctor in tears. He said it was common and to just hang in there. He also advised me to stay off the scale for a week and I would probably have lost all six lbs. On the sixth day I noticed I suddenly starting urinating alot more and when I got back on the scales in a week, I had lost eight lbs. Hang in there and don't give up! Everyone is different.

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to call her soon and tell her to come here and join up so she can talk to you all. The fluids thing makes sense to me, having just had a huge series of cosmetic procedures post weight loss myself. I put on weight after every surgery, until I could start exercising again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
