Post-Surgery Sickness

Recommended Posts

Im having my surgery done in mexico on october 9th and Im flying in from Wisconsin. I've always gotten easily sick on airplanes, and am worried now because of the surgery that this will make it even worse! Has anyone else had this problem or other serious complications due to flying?

Im starting to get scared!

Just be sure and let your doc know and they will be able to give you meds immediately before you leave for nausea and perhaps an extra tablet to take on the plane if you have a long trip home.

Congrats on getting banded! Who is your doc?

Thurs. I'm from Wisconsin too! I flew from Tijuana to Milwaukee and had no problems except for a little discomfort on landings. (Had to change planes in Phoenix). I was very tired and happy to be home. It was a long trip. You can get some dramamine or even benadryl which might help with motion sickness--it will also make you tired and more likely to fall asleep on the plane. You won't have much in your stomach on the way home, but you still don't want to throw up, so it's a good idea to talk to the staff in mexico about it.

Good luck! If you live near milwaukee or north of there, feel free to PM me and I will give you my phone number so we can keep in touch. I did find a fill doctor in milwaukee who will follow up the mexicans. You'll need that in a month or so.

Since you'll be on Clear Liquids at that point (probably), I suggest ginger tea. It works wonders and most of the airlines will be able to make you a cup of hot Water to steep it. Whole foods in Madison carries it. You might be able to find it in the regualr groceries too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
