Hi all,

I'm very new to the site, just joined this evening. So a big hello to everyone. I'm going to be having my gastric sleeve operation next month, here in the UK. I have done a lot of research on the main areas of the diet and the op, and have of course discussed this with my surgeon. I just wondered if anyone had any extra advice they wanted to throw in? Anything I won't have thought of/anticipated?

Any advice on things to buy in preparation, or that I should take to the hospital with me would be particularly helpful. I've read some people saying to wear really loose clothing, and others suggesting some sort of control-wear to support the tummy area after. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Christina. x

Now, control wear will be the farther thing from your mind. Yes, wear loose clothing & you'll be glad you did. You'll do fine. Now, I had my sleeve 1 yr in June. I weigh myself every day. If I go up & we are talking 0.4 lbs, I get on the stick & take it off. One thing I would recommend is a scale that keeps it in memory. It judges your weight yesterday & today. I know I really didn't believe my primary Dr when he told me that the sleeve was a tool & he absolutely true.

Your hospital may offer you a "binder" that velcros around your abdomen. I think I was still sort of drowsy from anesthetic when they placed one on me. After wearing it a day I decided it was not of benefit. Totally optional I think.

I did wear a binder and it helped tremendously with the pain where they took the stomach out. I was 264 and had a belly that didnt like gravity! :-)

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely getting into the mindset of it being a tool, rather than a miracle fix. Very ready for the change!

If you are on aspirin regimen, stop it as it interferes with blood clotting and surgery.

Your doctor may prescribe Phentermine pre-surgery to help control appetite (stop 2-21 days before surgery).

You can mix non-flavoured Protein Powder with flavoured to adjust sweetness and control carbs.

Yellow and green jelly (Jello) count as Clear Liquids on day before surgery

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
