The meds help with the pain but drinking anything is hard. Can only get a few sips before I have to stop from stomach discomfort. I hope it gets easier to drink and eventually eat. I just want to feel normal again

Are you trying to do a bunch of sips in a short amount of time, or spacing them out? Try taking a single sip every 5 - 10 minutes until it gets easier. The swelling is what makes it so difficult at this point. It will get better in short order so you just have to hang in there. You're what...2 or 3 days post-op now? This part sucks but you'll be surprised at how big a difference in how you feel in a few days.

I stayed on top of my pain meds the first two weeks. When time was up to take another pill I took another pill. By the end of the weekend you should start to feel much better. Best wishes on your recovery!

Thank you so much. I appreciate your input. Exactly what I needed to hear 2 days post op. I'll hang in there and try not to get down.

Staying positive is a big thing in this first week. Surround yourself with things to keep you upbeat, whether binge watching a funny show, good book, or be busy with a hobby. We've all been there and are here to help support in whatever way we can. It's easy to beat yourself up and second guess everything. You aren't alone in that thinking. Most of us go through it but you'll look back in a couple weeks and say it was all worth it. You'll get through it!

Awe, you'll be okay in a few days. I haven't had mine done yet ,I'm 2 weeks away. I just read & read and everyone seems to have trouble and regrets. But then, things turn around! Take Care

I am 4 days post op. Up until now I have read everything quietly in the background never commented. I just wanted to say what a lovely supportive community this is. I had a nurse and my dietitician warn me away from the forums because people can be really negative and it won't help the healing process. But this thread proves them wrong. Thanks for being so supportive and human!!
Jfcarjr.... I'm still struggling with the Water sips. But it is starting to get easier. Just finished two tablespoons of yogurt and didn't have any issues... of course I used a baby spoon and just coated it and took a good 15 minutes to finish. But no pain in the process. Chin up!! We will get better and it will be all worth it when we can wear the new clothes we buy and look fabulous!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
