Recommended Posts

I am waiting on insurance approval and then date. I am 60 with b-day of 5/15. I have done changes of no smoking and I am at one week if no caffeine. Spoke with my insurance and they have assured me I should have no problem with the approval. Really excited for my next phase

I wish you all the best, CharlyScott! Leading up to surgery date and especially the day before, I went through every emotion there is, including pure terror. It was this site that got be through and I will be forever grateful.

Jeanne56. There has been times that I have felt like a stalker on here because I have read so much but in doing that I have learned also. I have been working on this for 9 years. I have found a wonderful clinic that has gone above and beyond especially after the last one which for me was a joke. I hope we can keep in touch. I do need a buddy!

@Sosewsue61 Where are you having your surgery done? Do you have a lot of pre-programs to complete before your surgery? Full of questions here. I am having my done in St. Louis. I feel that that is a great fit for me. Little one do keep you busy don't they! My life changed a lot since they came into our lives. We have just bought a 100 year old house, hopefully we will be moving in around the 17 of May. If my surgery gets scheduled for then I guess the husband will be moving us. LOL Please keep in touch. You can message me on here or my Facebook page is the same name as here. I have enough to keep up without more screen names. HAHAHA

I'm fairly new with the sleeve, which is not even a full 2 months old, but am happy to answer any questions I can. I've been following the food plan as closely as possible, that my doctor's office gave me but after being on this site, I know how much one doctor's instructions differ from another. I'm located near Buffalo, NY.

Yes, I am 63 today. Sleeve surgery was Feb 28, 2017. Been loosing about 1.8 lbs per week average. Last 8 days, I've stalled, but I hear that happens. Not having any complications. I have always been in good to excellent physical condition, other than obese. I wanted the surgery so that I can live out my 70s, 80s & 90s being active and without joint issues (hope, hope).

I had heard that also. I think it is a bit true. Experience does help. :>)

But also know that our metabolism is so much slower, so we really CANNOT be eating like we used to in our 30s and 40s. I was told that I'd be a good candidate because they could see by my food logs and discussions that I was already eating and moving as they would believe I should AFTER surgery, so all that was left to do was to have the surgery. I'm sure that it did help to already have the good habits going. But it was so frustrating that even with those good habits, I wasn't making much progress after the first 50 or so pounds came off on my own. The surgery for me was really a breeze. Never sick, didn't have much pain at all. I think because I already had been doing aerobic exercise 3-5 times a week and walked 3 miles a day. I'm on my 4th month now and have hit a 8-10 day stall. Hope it moves again soon. I am enjoying getting new clothes in a size I haven't purchased since my college days!

Happy Birthday!! Congratulations on your success so far. It will be an interesting journey for sure. I am so looking to buy clothes in a regular store. I start my liquids for 2 weeks on the 8th that will be killer but I am sure worth it.

Thank you for your birthday wishes. I've had a great weather day planting flowers in my yard.
The liquid diet was tough pre-surgery especially since your stomach has no change yet. It expects everything to be as normal. My nurse support that week told me if you feel hungry, go ahead and have more Protein Shake. What was a pleasant result was that I lost quite a lot of weight. [emoji4]
Use the time to find shakes and broths that taste good to you. Then when you have the 2-3 weeks after surgery, where you need to do liquids again, you'll have a stash ready. I actually made my own broths and froze little portions, so they didn't have so much sodium.
After surgery, the eating I thought was easier, because my body didn't want large portions and wasn't giving me hunger cues.
Good luck to you. Let me know if you want to continue communicating or if you have questions. We are all different, but can learn from each other. I like helping.

Sounds like great advice. Pre making the broth is such a good idea definitely going to do that. Totally agree learning from each other it is such a new ball game to be joining. I will appreciate any help I can get. Good luck on your continued success. Communication is good. Have a great day.

Have been reading things on this site like a crazy person, and yes, have learned a lot. I'm at the very beginning of this process and don't have a surgery date yet, but I'm hoping to have that narrowed down, at least, in a couple of weeks at my next appointment with the surgeon. I'm in upstate NY and have found the program I'm in extremely thorough--lots of nutrition counseling is required, as well as support group attendance and surgical clearance from a number of different specialists.

I've just been looking at my pre-surgery diet, which includes Protein Shakes twice a day but a real meal at dinner. One question I have--what can I put on steamed veggies to enhance the flavor? I'm pretty sure a big pat of butter is out . . . but beyond lemon or lime juice, any suggestions?

A lil olive oil, sea salt on asparagus. Celery seed/salt on green Beans Garlic, onion powder on anything.

Stir fry some pea pods, carrots, red onion, add some ginger, garlic and a pinch of cayenne.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
