One week out from DS Surgery and I can't stop crying

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This is my first post here. I am one week out from my DS surgery. I'm really surprised at how I'm feeling. I'm so disconnected and sad and irritable all at the same time! All I keep thinking is "What have I done to myself???" I had LapBand surgery in 2007 and never felt this depression. Is this normal? I just want to be my happy, positive self again. Thanks in advance for any replies. I'm feeling so lost right now.

I actually saw a therapist during my "transition" time. Your body is going through a major change. Don't be afraid to reach out for help.

Good luck to you.

You might be losing really fast and the hormone release is triggering depression.

See someone though, don't suffer alone.

I'm two weeks out and was a teary mess at my therapist's office this morning over the fact that I miss food. It's a weirdly emotional time - hormonally and a bit of mourning. I hope you have a therapist! I may have cried during our session, but I left feeling much better.

My mom's friend says that it is due to the hormones. She said that the first month is the hardest. You will eventually balance out and then feel a lot better.

YES! This is totally normal. My doctor, nutritionist, nurst, psychiatrist, prep binder and even office staff have drilled into my mind that the first month or so, I'm going to be completely miserable. I wish your doctor had warned you so you could brace yourself. I've been told it goes away after a few weeks. Hang in there!

That first week I was so depressed. I ate 1 tsp. of scrambled eggs for Breakfast and that depressed me as I thought I'd never be able to eat again. I had swollen ankles and was exhausted. It happened again at about 6 weeks out. I became terrified at what I'd done to my body. I was afraid I'd be frail and fragile.

What you're feeling isn't uncommon. I did, however, have therapeutic help. It helped put things into perspective as I began to figure out how my new system worked.

Nowadays (at almost 12 years out) my life is pretty normal. I eat, I do what I want, I wear what I want. You will, too. Give yourself time. It's only one week. Plus, remember: that anesthesia is doing a number on you, too. It can take a good long while for your body to normalize after hours of anesthesia.

I remember, I had the same thought after surgery: "What, what have I done?" My belly was split and stitched and from now my anatomy is very different...
However I could help yourself with another thought: From now, I will lose weight every day. I will be fit and slim soon.
And I felt much more better after it.

Please, smile. DS is our great chance for the new amazing life, so - smile and be happy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
