What to bring with me to Mexio?

Recommended Posts

Hi There, I am getting sleeved in Mexico on April 10, and I was wondering if there was anything special that any of you would suggest that I pack?

Someone here mentioned Gas-X strips to help with the gas bubbles, has anyone had any success with that?

All answers are appreciated.

Thanks!

Here is what you should bring:

1) personal items to clean your teeth etc.

2) house coat so you don't have to wear the hospital gown

3) slippers (The hospital didn't have any when I was there no sure if they do now but just in case i recommend you bring yoru own)

4) tablet or something to send emails.

I had my surgery done here in the U.S. but I could imagine what you need to bring should be about the same anywhere. I was only in the hospital for 2 days, so I packed light. I brought to the hospital, an extension cord so I can charge my phone & iPad. All the medications my doctor prescribed to me so he can give me instructions on how to take them post op, one extra pair of sweats in case the clothes I wore to the hospital would get dirty, 1 extra pair of socks for the same reason, a toothbrush, toothpaste, & light makeup. I brought my homework text books too but didn't need them since I slept majority of the time.

Height: 5'0"
Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs.
Surgery date: 2/13/17
Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs).
Current weight: 185.2
My profile picture is not me. It's my "FITspiration" body.

We might not need all of this, but some lists that I've seen include:

Documents needed to cross the border (passport, drivers license, possibly birth certificate if you don't have a passport)
Cashiers check or cash for payment
Gas-X strips
Chap stick
Chargers for phone or any other electronics
Extension cord
Heating pad
Books & magazines
Cash for incidentals and shopping, be sure to include small bills
Small pillow and blanket for flight. I remember for my laparoscopic gallbladder removal it helped a lot to hold a pillow against my stomach when trying to stand up or sit down.
Water bottle
Water flavoring
Toiletries
Washcloths
Robe, PJ's, comfy clothes, bra with no underwire
Flip flops for shower
Dry mouth lozenges

I had my surgery done last year in Mexico, the things i used were:

Pajama bottoms (you can wear them after surgery under your gown)

Personal toiletries - Tooth brush and paste (my hospital gave us Shampoo, conditioner & soap) but I would bring some just in case

Slippers

Long charging cords for your phone or ipad

Gas-x strips (some say they don't work but even if it was a placebo effect it worked for me)

A few Protein Shakes if you arrive a few days before surgery

You must have a passport and you should also call your bank and let them know you will be in Mexico in case you need to use your debit/credit card. Also make sure your cell phone is able to make international calls or texts so you don't get hit with huge roaming charges.

Congrats on your surgery! I am day 7 post op, I had the sleeve done by Dr Ariel Ortiz @ the Obesity Control Center. First of all you want to pack light you really don't need much. You will need some comfy clothes for when you are back at the hotel. Your toiletries obviously. A lot of people have heating pad on their list but most surgeons in MX use glue instead if stitches and the heating pad will just melt the glue. The things that I know I was very grateful to have are...

Gas x strips - absolute must

sugar free werthers candies - another girl gave this to me in the hopital after surgery and it was like the nectar of the gods to me lol

ramen noodle flavor packets - just in case

Chap stick

hope this helps ... good luck!!

I was thinking the heating pad was for neck and back pain. Definitely would not put on incisions.

Thanks for this list!!

I just went to Mexico on the 20th. Dr. Illan.

I thought I would just be lounging around the hotel room for 2 days after surgery. How wrong I was! The valet had us out walking (optional) both days. I was out for 5 hours the first day, and 8 hours the second.

I brought too many pjs and not enough real clothes. The real clothes should have a stretchy waist, as your abdomen will be swollen.

Good walking shoes are a must.

I did notice the virgin sleeves had the easiest recovery. Bypasses and revisions are harder.

Don't know what it is like with other surgeons...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
